Seriously, you should really stop hating on religious people. Of course they aren't going to automatically switch to straight science coming from religion. Because when a person has a family history of a set of beliefs for X generations, they are understandably(if you can be objective for like, 2 seconds) somewhat resistant to new ones. No matter how factual they may be, and, seeing as religion is based more on faith, not fact this only further complicates matters. Seriously guys, you just told an entire group of people that some of their strongest beliefs are total bullshit. Imagine that, something you have been told for years, and is one of the few things you are sure about, is now a lie, seen as no more then a fairly tale, what kind of reaction would you have? For the love a possibly non-existent god, chill the -blam!- out.

The truth can hurt. Hell, the truth can hurt like a 2 tonne concrete barrier smashing into your face at supersonic speed. But is that a good reason not to seek truth? NO! We shouldn't live in a lie no matter how comfortable it is. Why? Because at some point in the future the lie will hurt you. At some point the misconception will have dramatic consequences. Look at our world. What do you see? I see suffering. Endless suffering. And I think we should try our best to reduce it. Not all suffering is to be blamed on religion but a significant fraction is. People hating each other, people stoning each other, people discriminating each other, people murdering each other. All because of an old book written 2000 years ago. IS that NOT wrong?! It is something we could prevent. Not instantly, perhaps not even in a century but slowly as we continue to question blind and irrational beliefs they start to crumble, Just like granite is ground to sand, even the most powerful religions will fall. And yes this is mostly aimed at the desert religions, but I have reasons for that. Firstly, I'm european so those are the one most visible in my life and of course 'murica has done an excellent job proving my point. Secondly, When's the last time you heard a Buddhist hurting anyone? I'm not saying it doesn't happen but I sure haven't heard of it.

I'm an atheist and if I wouldn't mind being able to choose to believe in an after life and a god. It's be comforting for me personally. I'm an atheist because from what I see, there is no evidence or reason to believe in a god. There's a benefit to it though. If you're religious and stick to what you think is moral (IE. not stoning women) than you're alright by me. Believing in god, in my eyes, just means they haven't REALLY questioned it and honestly, why should they? Faith can be of huge merit to some people, I have anxiety and depression and I'm sure honestly feeling like I can be with my loved ones forever would make me feel more comfortable. I'm juggling the idea of trying to give myself some reason to believe in an afterlife. It's hard though because I'm a rational person.

I don't hate on religious people, and I don't behave in any way you described. So can I have some chocolate milk?

If someone told me it was a lie I would look further into it and see if that person was correct. I wouldn't waste my time crying about it. No sense crying over the truth. Faith is retarded, too. I stopped believing in stuff without evidence after 6th grade. If someone had actual proof that there is a God I would believe in the deity(eyewitness stories don't count). I wouldn't worship it, though. I find making someone worship you, taking away freedom and is more like a dictatorship.

I'll stop hating on religious people when they get the hell out of politics. Stop making legislation that follows rules in some ancient text, some guidelines that are supposed to get you into the afterlife when there is more than likely only one. Stop messing up my only life for the sake of your theoretical second one. Untill that happens i will point out obvious flaws in their religion.

This thread....despite all the tools that have now been given to the community, this thread is a shining example of why we should still not be allowed to discuss Religion. Politics is okay, but that 7 weekly LGBT threads we get tends to tire me out.
-
This thread presupposes that the non-religious are typically more informed than the religious. The majority of religious people have no idea why they believe what they believe and just believe what they've been told they should, and the majority of the non-religious have no idea why they believe what they believe and just believe what their mom didn't believe because she forced them to go to church one day when they wanted to sit home and play Pokemon. The fact is, most people are ignorant. And to both of these groups of people, I have no inclination to entertain their delusions of intellectual superiority or even competence. The ignorant deserve to be mocked until they cease to be so, because ignorance is dangerous to the society that I live in.
-
Well, it depends. If they're telling me my beliefs are wrong, an eye for an eye. If they're simply stating their beliefs when intollerantatheist comes in and is like "YUR SHUVIN DOWN MUH THROAT!!!!11!!1!", then I understand why anyone would get mad at that.
-
Boy I sure miss when religious discussion was banned.
-
But it's fun. :(
-
No, because every time I show compassion they break out in song singing, "thank the Lord!" and forget all about me.
-
Emotional appeal doesn't work against these people.

Edited by omg a bannana: 3/12/2013 4:16:44 AMSo we should be nice because they're ignorant and they can't come to terms with reasonable and factual things? Plus it's not like we're singling out individuals to hate on just because they're religious(at least I'm not)
