The "Lawless Zone" Theory

So I've had an idea for a kind of competitive multiplayer in Destiny that I thought would be quite neat, and I wanted to get the Community's feedback. So the basic idea hinges on the game being open-world, at least in some places. The idea, as you can see from the title, is to have a "Lawless Zone" or, rather "Lawless Zones" in the game, in this open world. In the Lawless Zone, you would be able to attack anyone you wanted, assuming you can't attack other Guardians in the City or anywhere else since you're supposed to be on the same team in a sense. In these Lawless Zones, there would also be NPC enemies, so you could choose to do a plethora of things, and interact in a variety of ways with other people and NPCs. You can, for example, choose to go it alone and either kill anyone/-thing you see or avoid confrontation and just look for new, hidden guns or something. You could also choose to form a group and occupy a specific area, dominating it, killing people or having them join your group. You could go around and ignore player characters and just go to kill all the NPCs in the area. There's so many things you could do with an open, ruleless, lawless zone. So what do you guys think of the idea? Keep in mind that there are no set, "static" servers, so even if one group got really big and tried to overtake the Lawless Zone, people would not always be in their "server", so it wouldn't be a huge problem except for running into them once or twice. And, even then, another group could form another large group in opposition and that in and of itself sounds really fun -- player-created, nonstructured, "clan" battles that could go on forever if people stayed online. So whatta you guys think? I know it's a lot to take in and that my organizational skills are well below sub-par. It's quite late. e: Also, the addition of NPCs into the PVP scenario makes it so that there's still something you can run into and have a confrontation with if you're having a hard time connecting to people to bring into your "shared world". Because I see this "shared world" thing as sort of being like if matchmaking matches in Halo dynamically updated. You could go on a killing streak in one "game", die, and then respawn in another "game" with new people, with the same score. Obviously that wouldn't work for Halo matchmaking since the goal of it in there is to reach the winning score before the other team and if you're constantly against other team the competition is invalid, but when the point is to just kill things with people or kill people, whether to get money, guns, experience, upgraded stats, whatever, it doesn't matter what the other person has in relation to you as long as you can kill them.

  • These "lawless" zones I have thought about a lot. They probably will be present in the game, and will make it very fun.

      •
player-created, nonstructured, "clan" battles that could go on forever if people stayed online.
Many Halo: Reach clans used to make forts on forge world and 8v8 "raid" like clan battles would go on for hours. I have been a part of a handful and they are so much fun. That alone is what kept me wanting to play Reach. Chillin with my group and harvesting tears from other groups while we capture there base and they try to take it back. Most fun I've had and if they had a lawless zone in Destiny, it would keep me, and I'm sure many others playing the game for years. Simply because so many different things can happen in these player constructed fights, especially when you are apart of an organized clan. It's like a whole new campaign everytime.

        • Hasn't it already been established that there are public domains where people can interact, and that secondly, if one didn't want to fight others, there would be an option for such a thing and they would never have to worry?

          • that would be amazing, but I'd have to agree with Euphorius in saying that the majority of players probably wouldn't like it. I could definitely see Bungie making some amazing and huge multiplayer maps, but they will probably go off of the standard multiplayer formula. In the ViDoc, there appeared to be clan names when they showed the menu screen. I wonder if there will be modes focused around clans kinda similar to planetside.

            • That's actually a good idea although to encourage players to go there the enemies should either give higher exp rewards for killing them or give enemies a higher chance of dropping good loot. That way you theres a risk/reward element. Do you take your more effective equipment o have a higher chance at killing the tougher enemies/ ambushes, or take bad equipment hoping to beat the ai's without fear of losing anything. Although there should definetely be an easy escape option to leave the place. Like a teleport crystal from SAO to emergency teleport to the nearest non pvp area.

Honestly I hope more work is put into pvp than this. I don't think I will have much incentive to do pvp if this is how you do it. I guess its hard to say until I tried it myself though. Having an arena type area does sound cool though. And if NPC's are included in this idea I think that it should just give you the idea to play against either all NPC's or all real people, it would be annoying imo if they were mixed together.

            • I just want to say, anyone who believes Destiny won't have PVP are foolish. You think Bungie is going to alienate their core audience? When various media say that Destiny has competitive multiplayer? Lol.

              • I think that Bungie will use the whole training simulation idea for regular matchmaking, but will sometimes have giant wars between 2 rival factions. The war will be hyped for a few days so that people know when its going to happen, and there will be utter chaos as huge numbers of these factions fight for victory for their faction. I think it would be very objective driven and would be focused on one faction controlling a certain piece of territory. There would be multiple "fronts" so that the play space doesn't get to crowded. Each front would be like 30v30. To me this would be the ultimate combination of regular matchmaking and all out bloodbath.

              • it might end up kinda like in how skyrim how if you are in the city you killing everything can mess up your game but when your in the wilderness you just kill whatever, or if there were a lot of people in one server you might play a pvp game similar to planetside

                  • Open World PVP has unfortunately had a bad track record. It violates the cardinal rule of making a MMO/Shared-world: PROTECT THE CAREBEARS! Back in my early MMO career I played an excellent game by the name of Shadowbane, an open-world MMO based entirely around griefing and killing your fellow characters. For a hardcore like me, it was a paradise of death, suspicion, deceit, and backstabbing politics. You never knew if that player on the horizon was going to faceroll you or help you kill the mob you were so desperating try to farm. HOWEVER, there's a reason not many people have ever heard of Shadowbane. It died. And quickly too. People do not like to be ganked. The majority of a playerbase is ALWAYS casual, and casual players don't enjoy the bloody interactions of free and open PVP. Now, in regards to your post, even having set areas of open PVP violate the cardinal principle put forth for Destiny: Creating a grand, spontaneous adventure with your friends. I'm not sure if including open-world PVP is compatible with the Unity of Vision put forth in the preview video by Jason Jones.

                    • The only PvP that makes sense with the theme of unity is some sort of training simulation or war games

                      • I don't know, zones sound fun, but considering that only 6 players can go on a raid I think that it wouldn't be able to support enough players AND NPC's to make such an experience viable. (because of system limitations for 360 and ps3)
