Destiny, the swiss army knife of gaming. Addressing all audiences of gamers.

In DeeJ's mailsack this week, I posed this question:
Posted by: Spawn How will you be addressing all player audiences within Destiny?
I'd like to expand on this conversation a bit, because I feel that it's important. Cooperative player or not, I think we can all agree that Destiny will have a wide range of goals, missions, objectives and checkpoints to encounter. Through all of this we have the choice of deciding our own skills as being a solo player, or chiming along with others. We knew that through Bungie's Halo era that there are certainly goals in the game that no achievement can list. The unthinkable. "Mythic" difficulty or "LASO" was invented by the community during Halo 3, only to be later seen used in terminology for Daily/Weekly Challenges in Halo Reach. But during this era, there were certainly more unknown goals to arise - Rube Goldberg machines from forge, screenshot contests, Campaign Challenges, certain medals to attain, style of kills - I'm talking world records. It has been mentioned multiple times in IGN's article that
"Destiny is fully playable by yourself, but designed to seamlessly connect you with friends"
Since there are no menu screens when you load up Destiny - you're immediately thrown into the world, I'd imagine that there is some-sort of preference system that takes place when your friends are online as well, so you'll appear in the same are as them. But what if you don't want to play with friends online? What if you just want to be a solo player and take things on your own and get that perfect screenshot for that contest? Can you sneak along with other parties of players and take part in their festivities? Will they be able to "kick you out", or perhaps you're part of an enemy group and merely playing the "mole" and trying to gather information. How will this impact your player experience? Have you ever tried to play a massive world game as a solo player? I find it incredibly boring, but that's my own taste and you're entitled to your own. Reversely, if you want to play in Destiny's world, but only for a strictly competitive experience and have no interest in taking part into the lore of Destiny, will that affect you outcome in the world later. (Molyneux anyone?) I hope to see Destiny as the game that fulfills all audiences needs. Some will come to Destiny for competitive matches, others for game progress, achievements and collectables, screenshots and amazing sight seeing, others to have a good laugh at the end of the day. I find it very difficult to address the needs of all these audiences, but I'm not the developer, Bungie is. Will playing as a solo player through a "campaign" be different missions as if you were to play with a group of friends? That's my biggest question at the moment. Should players be forced to experience Destiny with others? Destiny is being advertised as a coop game, but for those that have no interest in a coop game, will their experience be significantly altered - not better or worse - but may in fact be an entirely different story altogether? Only time will tell. What kind of player are you? What do you hope to achieve as your goals in Destiny? Are you a competitive/casual/social/freelancer player? I believe Destiny's biggest challenge is to preserve the heritage of all kinds of gaming communities. Furthermore, if done right, can also form these communities into new "worlds" so to speak, in that future Destiny games can also be shaped around these ideas that originated from this first community. But that's a whole different topic, speak at what you will. I'll do my best to adress your responses as needed.
Questions to address: > What kind of gamer do you consider yourself? > What is your most important goal/objective in a video game? > Are you a solo player? Do you prefer to always game with friends? Maybe somewhere in between?
Again, feel free to refer to the picture at the top of my post.

  • I'm a fan of both solo play and co-op games I'm hoping Destiny gets both of these right it already sounds like an awesome game and it doesn't even have a release date yet lol

  • Good post. 1) Lawful Neutral 2) Usually to get myself into a sticky situation so I feel like a complete BA if I get out alive. I take a lot of risks. 3) I'm solo or with a small group. If there was some epic battle going on and people were defending the last city against a unrelenting threat, I'd be the guy that breaks away and goes solo to the enemy stronghold and risks it all to sneak in and steal their biggest frigate and show up in the eleventh hour to offer clutch assistance. Can't wait!

  • Well, from the groups on the picture, I'm hovering somewhere between true neutral and neutral evil.

  • It would be very cool and satisfy all if within the game there was a sory of teleport system that transports you to worlds with different gamplays such as cooperative, competitive, solo. If you wanted to meet your friends it would be cool if they put a computer console to send game invites and then all of you head to either cooperative or competitive togerther. What if you want to play with strangers, well just go through the gameplay portals. I just think that it would make perfect sense and it would be simple while a feel of never stoping the game. Just a suggestion tho.

  • 1. True Neutral. I don't use my mic unless I'm in a party chat with friends. 2. To have fun. Be that killing enemies, chatting with friends, or playing for the story, it's all good imo. 3. Yes I am a solo player, unless friends are on. Usually I don't touch the adversarial MP modes anymore unless I can play them with AI bots. It's insane that Black Ops 2 is one of the only AAA titles that implements bots, and that needs to change imo.

  • 1. Chaotic Good for sure. I stand up for the way a game should be played, but I don't ignore people that get under my skin. I would like to move more towards the Lawful Neutral; maybe in time... 2. The teamwork involved in the co-op and competitive is what I will invest in the game. I don't have a lot of time to play games, so what time I do put in will be to focus on some of the long distance relationships I want to maintain. It's all about the Brotherhood.

  • To be honest every company says their game will cater to everyone and address their issues but most of them don't... Sadly.

    Heh. Loved the picture.
Questions to address: > What kind of gamer do you consider yourself? > What is your most important goal/objective in a video game? > Are you a solo player? Do you prefer to always game with friends? Maybe somewhere in between?
1. I've gone through phases in my gaming career. The three big phases I can remember are: Neutral Good as a young gun, Neutral or Lawful Evil as a middling sort (I blame Gears of War), and I've turned more into a True Neutral where I am today. I rarely wear a mic or play with friends anymore. 2. I am a sucker for collecting things and maximizing things. I've spent many an hour on Bethesda's games trying to get the right balance of readiness for all threats, firepower, armor, and being lightweight in order to maximize loot. I do so love loot, money, and customization in games. Bigtime hoarder. Competition is probably my second favorite thing to do in games... I love a good scrap between two teams that really know what they're doing. 3. Definitely a solo guy. I just sort of lost the enjoyment of playing with friends. I hope that'll change with Destiny, though, because it seems like the type of game that'll focus on team play and relationships a lot more than Halo. I share your concern about how well Bungie will be able to cater to all audiences. I'd like to see different "tracks" for players to go down: such as a player vs. player track where teams/factions fight, an exploration track where an individual or a group can explore new places and progress in a story, and a dungeon clearing track where we accumulate loot and stuff. All three tracks could add to your online "status" (defined as gear options, online rank, reputation, standing among peers and within factions) but in different ways. Writing that last sentence gave me an idea: I think Destiny needs to find a way to integrate reputation, collective and individual, into the game heavily. You know how a lot of games offer friend's leaderboards to see who's got the highest score on X or what have you? Bungie could take that to the next level and integrate it with factions to the point where perhaps, say, Seven Seraphs becomes known, because of the choices of its players, as the faction that tends toward X or Y. That'd be a lot of fun online and would be a way to give players a feeling of being a part of a living world they affect.

  • I am definitely of the Lawful Evil category. In a video game, I aim to dominate by any means necessary. I am not really a solo player, I always like to fight with a small group at my ability level.

  • There are some really cool ideas in there. I consider myself a well rounded player (either chaotic good or true neutral, by the way), which is probably the most difficult to develop for. I enjoy a good competitive game here and there, but story is just as, if not more, important. For example, and of the Halo games and BlOps are some of my favorite online games because of the competitive nature, but also because it's a very social experience for me. I never play BlOps online unless I'm with a friend, though sometimes I'll get into a Halo match to do a bit of trash talking and enjoy myself since I'm awful at BlOps and pretty good at Halo. On the flip side of that, The Walking Dead Game was probably my game of the year and Bioshock and the Mass Effect games are some of my all time favorites. The Halo games have always ridden that line for me of good story, fantastic universe and top of the line multiplayer. I'm hoping Bungie 1-ups their Halo story history with Destiny. With their history of creating brilliant universes, I have no doubt they can do this. What do I think is most important? Experience and immersion. A game can have top of the line multiplayer and one of the greatest stories to be told by mankind, but if I don't feel invested in it then it might as well be a foreign film with no subtitles (I'm not bilingual, in case you couldn't guess). It's why I've never been a fan of CoD games and why I love Mass Effect, Bioshock, Skyrim, Halo, etc. Skyrim perfectly encapsulated that immersion, but it was also one of it's biggest failings. When I first put that disk in, it didn't leave my Xbox for three months and I probably accrued 75 hours of play. But the moment I took the disk out, I haven't felt like playing again. It's partially because other worlds have called. It's partially because my friends are all playing other things now. I think Destiny's online aspect should help to remedy that, by giving me a reason to keep playing (with friends) but unless they really nail it and allow players of all sorts to feel immersed and invested in the world, then it will fail. So, I guess I'm in it for the ride. For escapism. Isn't that one of the most amazing things about games...?

    • > I don't sink hours and hours into games as much as I used to, and now I use gaming as a way to keep in touch with friends now that our group is scattered all over the country. > Solo: Immersion. I want to be there. Pure escapism. With friends: it's a mix of having fun, working together as a team, and immersion if possible. Not a lot of co-op provides immersion unless it's Dead Space 3 or something along those lines. > A good mix. I like my solo time, like with Dark Souls. And then with friends, it's all about Borderlands 2. But at the same time, I enjoy the multiplayer aspect to Dark Souls sometimes as well; helping out others through particularly tough boss battles, invading others sometimes. I think that's why Destiny will be so great. It'll bear a resemblance to Dark Souls and Journey in the way that it's as single player as you want it to be. I believe the "shared world shooter" aspect comes in by not only is it always online but there is no start-up menu. It's both always co-op and always solo. But I'm also of the camp that I like playing MMOs solo. I like seeing other people around, feeling I'm in a fully occupied world, but still doing the lone wolf thing. Roaming around seeing other people going about their business makes the world feel real to me. And like I said above, personally, for me, it's all about immersion.

      • 1. I consider myself casual in the sense that I like to have fun, but I log enough hours a week to consider gaming a job so I'm not casual in that sense. 2. I like to explore games. Discover things. Learn about the lore and immerse myself in the story. 3. I'm in between. I like playing with friends for the moments that aren't scripted. The "you had to be there" moments, like things someone said or a ridiculous kill. I think you bring up a lot of good points. Based on what little info we have here's my opinion, feel free to disagree...I think Destiny is going to blur the lines of traditional labels (like MMO and FPS) which is why they are calling it a "shared world shooter"...So we need to rethink the idea of "campaign" altogether. I don't think we will be forced to play with others and I don't think the story will be different if anyone chooses to go solo, they'll just won't have the "you had to be there" moments of playing with others. Loot is more satisfying when you don't have to share it though. Like I said above, I like to play with friends, so the majority of the time I will have company. But when they aren't around or I feel like exploring I will be off on my own. Now, if I'm on Mars and I come across you in a battle, I might stop to help you out. As a someone who prefers to play solo, if you see me in a fight, you may choose to keep on going, which is fine. Or you could help me out and when the enemies are gone we part ways. Red Dead Redemption had a multiplayer option where you could explore the sandbox world with others, but once people realized you could kill each other, you would spawn into the map and in 15 seconds someone would ride up and shoot you in the face. There was no reason to work together or even use the designated areas for PvP. It was just mindless killing. It sounds like Bungie has a friendly fire setting in place to prevent that from happening. So far it sounds like Bungie has all the bases covered. If you're a competitive person and don't really care about the story, PvP. If you want to go it alone, feel free...If you run into other Guardians you won't have to worry about them attacking you, and chances are they're on their own path doing their own story and might not be interested in joining you anyway. Again, this is all based on what little info is out and my opinion so feel free to disagree.

      • I swear Im not a casual, I swear OT I usually play solo because I don't renew my gold very often, but with the 720 looking grim, I may get the PS4 and then that wouldn't be a problem. The most important objective in a game? Damn, thats tough

What kind of player am I? I'd say it varies between Lawful Neutral and Chaotic Good. My goal in a video game? Have fun. It's a game... which is made for entertainment... AKA fun. Don't think that means I don't value victory though. Solo or CoOp player? CoOp definitely. Everything is better when you play with friends. That philosophy is what lead to me creating my clan. Seems like that will be useful for Destiny. On a side note, my friend showed me that picture a while ago and I was actually thinking about it yesterday, only to have it show up here today. Funny coincidence.

        • Wait, if you're "immediately thrown into the world", what if you're a new player, and you start the game and immediately get killed off because everybody else has better stuff than you? It'd be hard to catch up after that, and would alienate players new to the game.

          • I am not sure what i will get out of Destiny at this moment due to the lack of information. But what I do hope for is to build an identity in the world. People may not know me by name but hopefully by my look and maybe insanity (if they can hear me over the voice chatter of the world). I hope the Spaceships play a large part in the game as well I would love to be known as a fantastic pilot that can play a big role in space battles(if there are any). I just want to play the hero and feel the part and be fully immersed in the world. I want to feel the weight of success and defeat and how heavy those words in the Vidoc to be true to the game. "Become a hero........ or see the last light of civilization fade. I want to be part of giant raids in which humanities very existence hangs in the balance with allies ( be they real world friends or complete strangers). I also want to experience those events that Bungie did not plan but just occurred within the game. I want this game to propel all gamers and game companies into the future. Enough of these rehash games screw the box that is what we think games are meant to do. Let our imagination and ambitions finally run free in this world be it current gen or next! Bungie your a fantastic studio and I know you guys will try your hardest to make this next decade to come fantastic and in turn usher gaming into a new and better decade.

          • -What kind of gamer? The kind I suppose who spends a lot of time messing with the game's mechanics so that he can find out in what ways he can exploit them. That goes anywhere from spending hours in a fighting game's training mode, to hours spent spent staring at spreadsheets so I can min/max in RPG's. I play to win, because winning is fun when there's a sense of mastery involved. If I feel like a game's particular mechanics lends itself to boring, overly simple, or shallow strategy, then I won't bother playing anymore. When it comes to genre I like everything except for sports games (and most rhythm games). It's really more of a game-to-game thing for me. For plot preferences that depends. I love a good plot when I get one, but that's hard to define since a "good plot" depends entirely on what game that plot is for. For example Katamari Damacy was the perfect plot for that game. It took in the feel of the world and gave context for the gameplay mechanics. At the same time, a novel adaptation would be pretty terrible. I don't often get into game's plots but when I do, I go crazy over them. I have to do tons of research because I feel this craving to know more. -What is my most important goal/objective? To have fun. Above I've outlined how I generally play where there's some adversarial or clearly defined metric for "winning", but now and then you get a game that doesn't quite have any way to win. Think Minecraft or GTA. At that point I just like seeing how crazy I can make scenarios by manipulating the game environment. -Am I a solo player? This depends entirely on the game. I love fighting games and fighting games are built entirely around their community. No competitive community, no fighting game. Playing some kind of RPG with optional multiplayer? Depends. Sometimes I'll want to clear some dungeons with a team, other times I'll be in the mood to try and solo a boss just to see if I can.

          • I never thought about the "mole" idea, that would be awesome. Anyway... I would consider myself semi-competitive. I always want to win. Sometimes I will get suuuuper pissed when I lose, other times, not so much. It really depends on the opposing team, or if I'm playing alone/with friends. My most important goal would definitely be to have fun. If it isn't fun I'll get bored quickly and won't wanna play. I would say I'm in between. While I much rather like playing with friends, I wouldn't mind being the one to go alone up ahead to check out an area. Or maybe break from the group to try and flank a group of enemies.

Q: What kind of gamer do you consider yourself? A: One who is always interested in exploring the lore, and one that likes to do so with friends if possible. But i can also be very competitive. Q:What is your most important goal/objective in a video game? A:Im a completionist, so collecting things and getting the best stuff make me happy. Q:Are you a solo player? Do you prefer to always game with friends? Maybe somewhere in between? A:I almost always enjoy playing a game more when im with firends, but the story and solo rpg type can still keep me insanely entertained ex:skyrim
