How big and open do you think/hope Destiny will be?

Destiny has been equated to an MMO for the console, see this article, and one of the biggest gripes I have with MMO's is the faux-openness of the worlds. They usually have a safe hub area with some jungles or something outside with constantly respawning enemies (another thing I hate) for the player to explore and do missions. But the areas don't really feel open when you are confined, if I see mountains in the distance I should be able to walk to them and maybe find a quest there. I truly hope Destiny will let us explore those mountains. We can't take previous Bungie games as examples since they were mostly linear shooters, but some other games come to mind when thinking about "true" openness. Games like Skyrim and Just Cause 2 seem to understand that players want to explore their surroundings, but would this be the best fit for Destiny, or will we see environments more akin to MMO's? Borderlands is a shooter that seems a bit more open than others, but still feels confined to specific areas and there isn't much exploring to do. Although, I'm not sure what kind of game world would fit best with a FPS. Far Cry did the open world FPS pretty well, but once you add multiplayer everything changes. I for one just can't wait to see what Bungie surprises us with. I was just wondering about the community's opinions and if you think we will see something more like traditional MMO's or space Skyrim online. EDIT: An interesting idea came up that Destiny won't be played mainly from the disk, but from dedicated servers which would make the possibility of an open world game all the more probable. I think this could happen especially since the game is going to be strictly multiplayer and online 24/7 because of that the game would most likely have to run from a server. I was wondering how you thought this would affect the game, and in particular the openness of it.

To be honest? If we're being ambitious and going with the "Bungie needs to make an absolutely amazing video game to even come close to following up Halo" mentality, I'd like to see 50 - 100 mi^2 of explorable land per planet. In reference to the picture above, assuming there's 7 planets explorable in this game (which I think is highly likely), that would put Destiny at a world (in total) with an area almost 9 times that of Vanilla WoW (80 mi^2), 33% bigger than Just Cause 2 (400 mi^2), and being just around 100 mi^2 larger than Test Drive: Unlimited (618 mi^2). In my opinion, this could be one of many "big things" that could push Destiny from "oh look... a Halo MMO" to something that could be really popular. e: That doesn't include all the Space areas you can travel through in your customizable ships, so keep that in mind. Also it doesn't factor in any aerial travel one could have on any given planet. However, I don't feel like measuring game worlds in volume (nor does anyone else, according to Google), so we'll stick with 700 mi^2 + Space for now.
