P= progressive scan i = interlaced Interlaced means that for a single refresh, one half of the lines are projected/shown/displayed/scanned onto the display. The next refresh does the other half of the lines and "persistence of vision" (which occurs in your eye/brain) takes care of the difference. Progressive scan means that all lines are displayed on each refresh of the entire screen.

P is pixel rate I is image refresh or some such. P is better and more commonly used standard.
