Proud to call yourself an atheist? Sign in

I am proud to be an atheist. For me, science is adequate to answer life's questions. I am confident that the mysteries that haven't been solved scientifically will be. I think that humanity is capable of anything, and it will only be a matter of time until we achieve the status we reserved solely for gods. Fellow atheists, please check in. Just state that you are an atheist, and why. If theists come in, be respectful. Lets see if we can have a conversation without it turning into a pissing match.

I am as concerned, proud or boastful of my spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof) as I am about my sexuality. To me, they are both something that is not for common, anonymous public consumption. If someone wants to explore that part of my life, we will do so cooperatively, intimately and in privacy. This idea of "I am proud to be left handed" or any other difference (which means nothing in the public sphere) is alien and confusing to me. I don't share that sort of thing about myself with strangers, I surely don't feel obligated to shout or rub any noses in it, and why others feel the need to crow and boast? Utterly beyond me. Being overbearing and boastful is not the same thing as pride. Being private and reserved is not the same thing as shame. Jesus! I know, the irony. But seriously. Waving your ass, your flag, your t-shirt, your whatever is (to me) more a sign of insecurity than of real, solid and self-assured pride.
