I know that I am. I won't try to say I'm just an atheist. I openly admit I am anti-religion. That said, many atheists are just atheists. They quietly go through life, knowing there is no god. Then I start a thread, admittedly to rustle some theistic jimmies, and they just post that they too are atheists, and they state why. Suddenly the religious folks jump on them the way a dog jumps on a meaty bone.
Why? Why can't an atheist respectfully state what they are and why? If we have to respectfully listen to why you have a relationship with Jesus or Mohammed, or Vishnu, then why can't we state that we have a deep relationship with science? Furthermore, why can't atheists evangelize? If theists can ride around on mission and ask people if they've found Jesus, why can't an atheist talk to someone about science, and how the old theistic notions of how our world work are being cast aside for the concrete theories that predict so much?
Discuss respectful atheism, and why theists won't allow it.

You are so -blam!-ing annoying. Why cant you athiest just not talk about being athiest?
-
To be fair, it's usually the other way around on the internet. If a christian expresses his beliefs on this forum or really any other, he will get at least one comment calling him a dumb-ass. That is why many theists assume that all atheists are anti-theists. I am an atheist myself and I don't care what other people believe as long as they don't try to shove it down my throat.

Edited by Cat: 2/24/2013 9:24:52 AMAtheism in and of itself is simply the non-belief in a deity; there is nothing else that adheres by default. I happen to be an anti-theist, because I think religion causes more harm than good, and makes otherwise rational people hold irrational beliefs, but I also respect their right to hold said beliefs. I want to make it clear that I wouldn't force the world to cease to belief in deities if I were given the chance; I'm not a fascist. Sure, I'd prefer that people believe as few irrational things as possible, but I'd want them to reach that state by their own inquiry. So, why am I an anti-theist? Because religion is a detriment, and there are very good reasons to oppose it. I realize that most of the world is religious, and I have to share the planet with everyone, so I have no qualms with co-existence, but I do not respect their beliefs; just their right to have them and individuals themselves if they are good-natured.

Edited by aBallisticToucan: 2/23/2013 10:20:22 PMBecause they go online to places like bnet and see at least 20+ atheists circlejerking at any one moment.

You are generalising theists to accuse them of generalising atheists.
-
Vocal minorities. People going through the annoying Athiest stage tend to be the loudest.
-
Most atheists on this site are just hipsters who do it to be cool.
-
Respectful people (regardless of faith) probably avoid religious threads.
-
You're an anti-theist, but you dislike anti-atheists....

Edited by Trad: 2/23/2013 6:56:04 PMTeh puma has come to a rather odd conclusion. Hardly anyone in this thread has ever met an atheist, or anti-theist in real life. Apart from the more famous people, they are describing entirely "backwards" atheists. Teh puma has never met an atheist in real life that promotes their atheism religiously, he has never met a preachy anti-theist either. It seems that many people on this website take what they see from arguments on this forum and youtube, then they try and apply that to all, or at least a somewhat large group of atheists. Either once again Virginia is defying what this forum truly considers as a social norm, or some of these people are just posting bs... teh puma is inclined to believe it's the second option.

I'm glad you brought this up. It's called a logical fallacy. Essentially the existence of anti-theists who are also atheists doesn't mean all atheists are anti-theists. I'm a non-anti-theist atheist. I'm against religion, not theism.
-
Why do atheists think that theists think that atheists are anti religion? Checkmate.
-
Probably because you keep posting shit like this to piss theists off.
-
Eventually, it will become mythology.
-
Because you don't respectfully state it. I don't care that you're an atheist. You just keep making threads taking blatant shots at religion. Eg: "Atheists are better people because they do good for no reasons theists only do it because they fear God". Every religious thread I've seen has been atheists bashing religions. I'm sure there have been more than a fer where theists bash atheists and in that regard you should take your own advice and just mute them. If you don't like hearing people ramble on about their religion what makes you think anyone wants to hear you ramble on about your lack of one? I don't care that you're an atheist anymore than you care that I'm a Christian. I wouldn't want you ramming your religion (or lack thereof) down my throat so I don't ram mine down yours. I don't care if you discuss science. I'm a theist who believes in a combination of creationism and evolution. You are just as able to talk about how you don't believe in a God as I am able to talk about believing in one. But if you don't like hearing about people talk about God then chances are people don't like you talking about your non-belief in God. And don't act like atheists don't jump religious people for stating their beliefs. I've seen more "Wow you believe in God? You're so stupid." than I have "Wow you're an Athiest? You're going to Hell." I don't care if you're an atheist that's your choice just like how it's my choice to believe in God.

Most atheists promote their atheism with religious vigor, which is entertaining to me.
-
Regretably its kind of hard to just un-invent things
-
Edited by Masque of Night: 2/23/2013 5:35:29 PMDon't know, but both sides of the coin are pretty annoying to me. If I want to hear about your beliefs and/or non-beliefs, i'll ask, but until then, please shut the hell up and keep them to yourself or someone else who actually cares.
-
Aren't they?
-
Discuss respectful atheism, and why theists won't allow it.
Because those are rare on the internet.
-
If you are "anti-religion" then you are exactly that which you claim to "hate". Most "atheists" claim that religion causes division and war. But then themselves have ZERO tolerance and are more divisive themselves. I am happy to let individuals be free to make their own spiritual decisions and coexist. Atheists seem to hate freedom.
-
I just dislike anti-theists, such as yourself "rustling theistic jimmies". You answered your own question.
-
So....it's okay to be an anti-religious atheist. But it's not okay to be an anti-atheism theist...? Seems rather hypocritical. Live and let live.
-
Why can't atheists accept that not apl theists are anti-atheism?
-
You say that you start threads to "rustle some theistic jimmies" That is exactly the kind of thing that gives an atheist a bad reputation. You're looking for confrontation and attention, not to convert anyone to your way of thinking. You're making an assumption that all theists are judgemental and disrespectful, I'm not, now what? Your own misplaced sense of superiority and arrogance is what provokes you to think that way, you crave attention.
-
I'm a theist, and I don't mind anyone being an atheist. Your thread is now invalid.
