Am I the only person who misses this genre?

Classic arena style shooter. Quake, UT. You know what, I'll even include Halo 1-3. You know how these went, there was a skill gap, you actually had to practice to get good and when you did get better you retained that skill and were able to defeat others. It felt good to actually win a match. It was competitive and when you put the time into it, it payed off. I miss these days. Sadly, I barely have time to dedicate myself to these kinds of games anymore because of school and work but I will always miss these days. Damn, I really want to play a ranked Halo 3 match or Quake Live or something.

Developers still make these such games, they're not extinct. Examples are Warsow (free), Quake Live (free), Shootmania, Xonotic (free), Painkiller, and Nexuiz. There's even a new one being made right now called Reborn by a big-wig in the FPS esports scene. I dare say the average FPS gamer, who would be a console player, doesn't know about these great PC titles because the perceived reality is that no one plays FPSs on PCs any more. I quote Bungie: "We made the game run without a mouse and keyboard. And now nobody plays shooters the way they used to play them before Halo 'cause nobody wants to." These fun, rewarding games are brutally hard on newcomers. They don't let players play how they want, they demand that players play the correct way - an attitude that is alien to the landscape of modern multiplayer games. If you want to see this genre flourish play more, even casually. Support them, don't just say it, do it. Consumers control the type of products that are created.

    • I'd say Halo is more of a slow arena FPS, as it is no-where near as fast paced as Quake or UT. Only current arena FPS is Tribes: Ascend, but that has gone downhill since the beta. Just play Quake Live.

    • I don't know if Tribes would be considered an arena shooter, but it sounds like you might enjoy it.

Hell no games of that genre were great. I wish I could have as much fun and drive that those games provided me, but sadly that time is long gone for the more generic garbage that the industry turns out nowadays.

      • yea it's a shame, I just want the cod kids to experience an arena shooter. I'm waiting for some hero game dev to make a skill based arena shooter. All games do is try to be cod now and it doesn't work. :(
