Honestly I've never got this, 'Theory'
There seems to be this general view among indie fans that if band/artist makes it big they've sold out. This baffles me how are they now 'crap' because they have gained mainstream success? By that standard The Beatles would have been wiped and flogged by their Cavern Club following. It's becoming a hindrance to bands and it's part of the reason that guitar bands are being restricted in the charts as their hardcore following is small and changing to a pop sound (Which doesn't always work) risks them losing it. Why is this? Why are bands forced to remain unsuccessful or risk losing their hardcore following?
Examples of 'Selling Out'
Green Day: 'Sold Out' with American Idiot when really it was there last listenable album.
Paramore: I've always hated them but apparently they again 'sold out', the few songs that are bearable are from that period of selling out.
The Strokes: They started experimenting? HERICS.
Bloc Party: Again, Experimenting=Selling Out.
Linkin Park: A move away from hardcore? SELLING OUT! (Still hate them).
I could go on but I'll end it here. Discuss Flood
TLDR: Apparently if you don't continue being Indie you're the worst band ever.

Edited by TheBrandingIron: 2/20/2013 7:39:50 PMI am not too attached to any band, so I don't believe any sold out. Trying new things and experimenting are okay. Companies do it all the time. It is about making money, trying to generate new sources of revenue.

Edited by Durandal: 2/19/2013 3:34:13 PMI thought Metallica was the definition of selling out.

Just stupid poor people who shouldn't exist in the world. if you don't know how money works then don't open your mouth Paramore is my favorite band and they never sold out Green Day continues to make music, they're one of the best bands out today People say Madonna sold out too, just cause theyre poor and dont understand money but im a girl what do i know

I can't believe this is still a thing.

I'm a big Metallica fan, but I can't deny the fact that they've sold out. Not because of their music, but this. Too bad they don't sell Metallica Christmas ornaments anymore. Those were the best.

Its funny the fans claim they should support the band or they could stop playing, they get the money they need and more fans which makes them sell outs. If you are a hardcore believer in something then your part of the problem, people say mainstream stuff sucks and that the under ground stuff (That few people like) is the best. Clearly you have your head up your ass because if they where good they would be mainstream.

Hipsters. 'nuff said.

Band makes the same record over and over again=people complain that it's too similar. Band experiments with their sound and changes their style/appearance a tad bit=they've sold out and are too different. Bands can never win. People are idiots.

to think that a band would reciprocate the exact same sound over and over again which made people like them in the first place is just plain nuts... when the change in a band does happen and the hardcore (retarded) fans dont like it, thats when they are branded as "sell outs". bands need to grow. if the direction they go in you dont like, find something else and always remember the stuff they did that you liked.

Yeah, I don't get that concept either. A band makes it big, that's good, they are making more money, be happier for that band. A band changes their music style, that's fine, if you no longer like it then simply don't listen to it, that's something up to the artist's personal decision, nothing you can do about it.

Edited by Cat: 2/19/2013 6:48:34 AMI don't personally use the word "sellout", but I have had instances where bands I like move in a different direction and lose me. Metallica is a great example, because while it is common for people to knock them for pursuing mainstream success starting with the Black Album, I just personally didn't like the direction they were heading in (although I wouldn't say the Black Album and all post 80s Metallica is bad by any stretch). This is not because it was more popular, and not because they were experimenting; it is because they deviated from what they were in the beginning, and not in a good way. The thing is, a band is always making a gamble when trying to change their sound; their hardcore fans might like the result, and they might pick up new fans, but they could also end up doing the opposite of both. I like some bands that evolved over time (Deftones, for instance), and others have disappointed me when they tried to change (such as Incubus). To sum it up, change is good, but not inherently, and there's a huge layer of subjectivity thrown in. As for me, popularity just isn't even a factor; I either like it or I don't.
