Introduction into the piece
As we enter into early 2013, the new emerging focus within the Department of Defense--alongside the private sector--is the evermore crucial question of creating a solid defense against the plethora of cyber attacks on valuable national assets. These attacks are far ranging, from a simple hacktivist defacing a meat packaging company's website with slogans about saving cows (lol), to intricate and damaging heists of intellectual information by those that seek to gain an upper hand in markets.
Thoughts? Do you agree? What do you think should be done about these attacks by China?
-
I bet the USA will... never see it coming.
-
attack of the clones anybody? lol
-
Did you write that? You should add sources.
-
What if China stole all the billing information from Sony?
-
I saw a full blown invasion today. Hundreds of Chinese people at an outlet mall buying all the cheap crap that they made to go sell it at 200% profit at home. My god man, such a rude group of people.
-
Honestly, I don't think this is anything new. China has always had a "war" with the western world with technology (look at how many copy cat "inventions" that have appeared). This is just the next step as they are starting to "catch up".
-
Why would they want to attack us? If they blow us up, nobody will buy their stuff.
-
They made a rash generalization, and an uninformed one at that, that all these attacks are coming from China. A lot of attacks, like the cows one, are by independent hactivist groups (see: anonymous). Although a cyber attack causing mass damage is a very real and ever-growing threat, it isn't just from China. In fact, the worst cyber-attack to date derived from the UK (which wound up nearly detonating a nuclear power plant).
-
we should bomb them. we have a good system going why change things up now USA, USA, USA, USA
-
Cyberwarfare, in my opinion, is our biggest national security threat. About your ways to approach these threats, I also don't think any of them are mutually exclusive; as in, if we do x, we can't do y. I think, in all honestly, a balanced approach of all three is the best way to go about countering these threats. I also think we should be conducting more of option 1 and 3, as we need to beef up our security and programs like STUXNET seem to work.
