Warning: A lot of the speculation of this thread is outdated and wrong. Proceed with caution, I'm not planning to update it for the sake of chronology.
As you might have noticed when reading IGN's Article on Destiny, they offhandedly mentioned a 4th Vanguard Class when describing the Seven Core Pillars of Destiny:
Pillar #2: A Bunch of Fun Things to Do
Staten proceeded to tell a story about a possible gameplay scenario in Destiny, in which Staten’s Warlock class character and Jones’s Vanguard (Staten explained that every Guardian wields some of the Traveler’s power: “You can call it magic, I guess.”) head off on an adventure together.
That would be enough to prove that Bungie isn't showing all of their cards with regards to class, but wait! There's more!
I was looking through the new avatars and themes and such on Bungie.net and I came across some new Destiny-Themed Private Group Themes. In stark contrast to the Profile Themes that are simply named Destiny 1, Destiny 2, Destiny 3, ect. the Group Themes had slightly more descriptive names which allowed me to discover what some of the symbols we've seen mean. Below are all the new group themes organized by subject:
Warlock Themes
Titan Themes
Hunter Themes
Enemy Faction Themes
The enemy Faction Themes are a topic for a different thread and a different time. Instead, I want to draw your attention to the first image in each of the Hunter, Titan, and Warlock Themes. You'll notice that each banner contains a small geometric symbol which I believe represents that particular class.
If you looked at the image embeded at the top of the thread, you'll see an annotated screenshot from the Pathways out of Darkness Vidoc which depicts a Character Selection Screen. You'll notice in each of the upper left corners of each character's panel there is a watermark symbol which matches the different class symbols, save for one that doesn't match anything else we've seen, which either represents the Vanguard or a different class!
A Vanguard is a unit that you stick at the head of your Army and they are a unit that leads the rest of the Army into Battle. Perhaps the Vanguard Class would function as a tank, or it would be some sort of Leader Class? We've seen Mass Effect's take on the Vanguard Class, which is a Biotic Close-Range fighter, but I can't imagine that Bungie would so closely copy someone else, if they had a close quarter combatant class, they could easily name it something else.
Your thoughts?
Update: In his thread, Wurstsalat has noticed some similarities between some recent Concept Art of Titan Armor and the character which I believed might be a Vanguard, and the Aesthetics match up strikingly, particularly the belt buckle. This seems to indicate that despite having a different symbol than the private group themes on Bungie.net, that character is a Titan, not a Vanguard, assuming that armor is class specific, and assuming that the Vanguard isn't a subclass of the Titan.

Update 2: It turns out that IGN misquoted the Joe Staten anecdote, Eurogamer elaborates with far more detail than IGN did:
Here Staten meets Jason Jones, who plays as a Titan class, described as a "serious, straight up soldier". He's wearing a Vanguard plate. Staten is a Warlock class, a magic user of sorts. Jason greets Joe with an emote and both players head for the hangar. Here we see Jason's space ship, a black scout class built by the Dead Orbit Foundries. Joe paid for his ship by finishing every bounty the Queen of the Reef had to offer. At the press of a button both players are flying up into orbit and outer space
So it is very unlikely that there will be a Vanguard Class.
The vanguards are the troops at the front preparing the way for the rest of the army. Beta users will be the first to play, preparing the game for the army of users coming with the games release. My guess is that vanguard will be a title given to Beta players. But, who knows?
-
In medieval warfare the vanguard was the troops on the front of the battle
-
Don't forget the creeper class
-
Bungie definitely haven't been truthful in some things in destiny but if vanguard was a 4th class what would it be, or others may be right and there is no 4th class and its just a title or rank. Or a future DLC Class?
-
Don't know, man....that screen seems more like a selection screen for the characters you already have - and the person in control has the 3 classes. Like in WoW, before enter the game, you must select the character. The empty slots are for future character creation. Now, if the screen said "class selection", that would be interesting.

Maybe the Vanguard is some kind of Senators like in Star Wars,or they are some kind of Prophets

Edited by Finomenal: 8/1/2013 7:26:30 AMIf you go to the Explore Destiny on this website and go to the Mars and Venus tabs you'll see, rather than a description, a statement that says "awaiting reports from the vanguard". Logically that would make no sense if that was a class. That would make as little sense as seeing "awaiting reports from the Titans". It's probably just a guardian with a special status. Most likely one that specifies him as a space warrior that will leave Earth and fight on other planets. Therefore the Vanguard is not a class.

LET THIS THREAD DIE
-
I still think a vanguard is an advanced guardian.
-
Edited by Stephen Bergen: 7/31/2013 7:52:25 PMI don't think Vanguard is a class! But a title. Sort of like a king. The man displayed in the destiny trailer could have been what they call the vanguard. If you notice the flags on his building are lined with the vanguard emblem. But hey its a long shot.
-
Wow Hylbelos, you do your research
-
The 'vanguard class' was a bit of false information. As others have stated, Bungie did mention 3 classes was not something set in stone, but currently that's all there is. The 3 classes they have covers the achetypes really well, they COULD add in a healer class or pet/turret class but I doubt it with the way they're focusing the game on action and what not, simply because those 2 archetypes are pretty passive and not directly combat oriented.
-
It said in a mail sack something you can become not implying an extra class also the " add character" slot could be for a new game and this is the vidoc they could have changed that by now.
-
If you look at some of the wallpaper they have up, you will notice that the symbols for every class but the Titan have changed.
-
Eric Osbourne did state that they're not sure whether there will be another class or not.
-
it is probably a fourth character slot, as in you can have four different characters playing even if they re all the same type
-
Hey come check out our pre-destiny clan!! Here's the link: http://vanguardians.enjin.com/home We welcome you with open arms! Please make sure to give a shout out to Corrosive Honor for getting you there! Chancellors names appear in red on the site so feel free to ask them any questions you may have!

As always, the red chicken scratch you call your handwriting is appreciated.
-
I'm still sticking to the theory that Vanguard is an advanced class of Titan.
-
The cube thing was originally a place holder for the titan symbol...so yeah
-
Vanguard is like Recon in Halo 3
-
Maybe the vanguard class can wield a close combat weapon like a sword or something or a shield that they carry. something like a lightsaber would be nice to i guess, or a spear with a energy knife at the end of it or something. something that really distinguishes itself from the others and i think having a melee weapon would defenlently help with that.
-
Consider, that the Vanguard could be a recon class. In the IGN scenario one was a Warlock and the other a Vanguard, with the mention of scout ships. A Hunter came to their aid. Suggesting that all three would be able to take down a single heavy enemy or a lightly armed group. Intel would be important in game design and large scale operations or raids. A Recon class could fit in nicely.
-
Form what I'v read it sounds more like a type of rank rather than a class
-
Dictionary says Vanguard is... 1. A group of people leading the way in new developments or ideas. 2. A position at the forefront of new developments or ideas: "in the vanguard of technical development". So possibly instead of being a leader in battle, it could be a leader in technology? Maybe a tech class eh?
-
I imagine the Titan will be the tank-class. Perhaps the vanguard's more of a glass cannon - they deal lots of damage, but die quickly.
