12/23/2014 Edit: This thread was made before Destiny was released. We didn't know how things were going to be yet!
There's a certain type of response that I'm expecting for this thread (immature and full of boob jokes), and then there's a certain kind of response I'm looking for (responsible conversation). I'm not telling either of you types of posters to leave. It's okay.
I would like to talk about breasts. Specifically, armored breasts. I don't want Destiny to go down a dark path of poor anatomy.
Allow me to say that the more unbalanced the ratio of female to male artists there are on a project, the higher the likelihood of us seeing game armor like this. It's annoying enough to have two melons on your chest, but when they're held up by gravity-defying pieces or metal, that's painful. Bras filled with cushioning and breathable material can still be painful. Imagine chicken wire holding up your moobs.
But that's an over-the-top fantasy MMO, not a space opera. So let's pick a space opera. Why does the world of Mass Effect require lady lumps on armor? Why are those emphasized boob pieces necessary in a game that made some huge strides in female representation in games? Do sports bras not exist there? Can we top that off with the idea of a blunt object going towards someone's chest? Lady lump armor will make things slide into the -blam!-ing sternum. You know, the bone right in front of a shit ton of vital organs.
So what's the solution for this problem?
1. Cut a hole in the box.
2. Make sure your artists/modelers are well versed in proper female anatomy.
3. Buy a sports bra.
4. Take the awesome male armor you had before and put a woman in it. Don't get me wrong! People come in all shapes and sizes. Breastplates will sometimes need to be a bit bigger for some people and some people will need slimmer sets of power armor. Sometimes people wear form-fitting armor, but that still doesn't excuse outlining the breasts on the armor. Wanting armor that caters to the female anatomy doesn't justify overcompensating for the female anatomy. Armored breasts do not need to be lifted and separated when one encapsulated piece suffices in the first place.
Done.
You think I'm kidding? I'm -blam!-ing serious.
-
I see your point, but it was well done in Reach, an I don't think Bungie will have female characters walking around with huge melons. The body differences were well done in all the Halo games (excluding Cortana). Remember Dare? She didn't have melons, neither did Kat, Bungie does it right, and that's probably not going to change.
-
You linked to Jenna Marbles, your argument is invalid.

*Facedesk* I'll pass

I wonder how many people even noticed that one of the Guardians in the Law of the Jungle trailer was female. I didn't notice until my third or fourth time watching it. It was either the Titan or Warlock... I think she was a Titan.
-
As to your question about mass effect, imagine how painful it would be for a D cup soldier to get in to armor without a little extra room. Not trying to be rude, just realistic.
-
-blam!- that. It's more comfortable to go au-natural. I want armored sagginess.
-
Well, look at Kat from Reach. Her "womanly assets" aren't over-exaggerated at all.

Edited by Atomic Tea: 6/2/2013 11:11:18 PMI was promised the breast thread ever. This is not the breast thread ever. This is the breast thread ever.

Note to self: When making video games remember to fap before you make the female characters.
-
I'm not expecting a problem with armor not looking appropriate. Did anyone play Reach? Female Spartans just had a slimmed down version of armor.
-
Maybe have the female armor similar to male but and little more slimmer and curved. Almost like those movies when you think it's the guy in the suit of armor saving you until the helmet comes off and he's actually a girl.
-
Edited by Verachi: 6/2/2013 10:44:53 PMUhmmmm 4:40 You're welcome. As for a serious reply, I think Mass effect armor is what Bungie should go for. It's not in your face but you can tell it's a woman. What they've done is the past also worked well. I doubt Bungie will go overboard with the boobs.
-
Boobs! How cares just Boobs!
-
In other words. Zero suit Samus, not armored up Samus.
-
I'm indifferent as long as it's not done over the top, like in the first picture you linked. I have a hard time taking a game seriously if their main advertising strategy is using a woman's body. Like the Tomb Raider games for example, never even bothered to try them because everyone referred to it as the game with the "hot chick" making me believe it's the one of the only things it got going for it. I'm not worried about Bungie doing this, but I understand where you're coming from. I remember reading an article online stating how impracticable boob plates would be in armor, but hey, it's a video game. While being realistic would be ideal for some, I'm sure most don't care. Like I'm said, I'm indifferent as long as it's not in your face. I also think a lot of it got to do with people just wanting things to look more "prettier" and "cooler".
-
I understand your reasoning but I think the entire reason for women's character models being over exaggerated (more like in the case of Mass Effect than that chick in a tin can) is that game developer's want you to be able to connect with your character, and in some cases for other people to be able to differentiate between genders on the fly. The best example I can think of off the top of my head is that one of my friends is constantly gaming but the way most people describe her voice is something around "like a 8 year old boy's". Most people that she ran into in Halo 3 and CoD think she's a little boy but the character models in Halo Reach, and 4 sometimes help people connect the voice with the appropriate gender.
-
But what if a woman wants to express her femininity by exhibiting the most universal basis of femininity; the shape of the female body? Everything else that's feminin is just a reflection of mentality and or culture, it changes.
-
Dufuq is wrong with you people?

Edited by o PR0JECT 13 o: 2/19/2013 10:36:35 AMI was always happy to see Cortana's it never let me down. Probably the best Game Boobs around. Not too oversized and each boob wasn't battling the cleavage domination. On a more serious note. Lets just have a little faith in Bungie. You sound a bit too worried.
-
While I agree with you, I think we need to give Bungie some credit. I'm sure they know what they are doing.
-
Tits obvious the game will display both male and female models to satisfy all possible demographics.
-
Edited by Omega Travis: 2/19/2013 5:27:06 AMIt's most likely that the ladies in armor will still have their "literal" breast plates. This isn't because Bungie wants the lasses to well, you know, but probably so players can differentiate between the male and females. Halo Reach's females were handled very well. My only gripe? Dem Spartans also had curves. Actually, I quite liked the Spartan curves... Carry on!
-
What's your opinion on the concept art of the female hunter? Is that okay? You can see her lady lumps, but it's not overly sexualized, and she's wearing fabric, not armour plates. Opinion?
-
I can tell this means a lot to you.
-
Like most people have said, I don't think Bungie has ever given a reason to make you worry. Just because this game is coming on as an MMO, I would doubt Bungie suddenly changes their portrayal of women.
