12/23/2014 Edit: This thread was made before Destiny was released. We didn't know how things were going to be yet!
There's a certain type of response that I'm expecting for this thread (immature and full of boob jokes), and then there's a certain kind of response I'm looking for (responsible conversation). I'm not telling either of you types of posters to leave. It's okay.
I would like to talk about breasts. Specifically, armored breasts. I don't want Destiny to go down a dark path of poor anatomy.
Allow me to say that the more unbalanced the ratio of female to male artists there are on a project, the higher the likelihood of us seeing game armor like this. It's annoying enough to have two melons on your chest, but when they're held up by gravity-defying pieces or metal, that's painful. Bras filled with cushioning and breathable material can still be painful. Imagine chicken wire holding up your moobs.
But that's an over-the-top fantasy MMO, not a space opera. So let's pick a space opera. Why does the world of Mass Effect require lady lumps on armor? Why are those emphasized boob pieces necessary in a game that made some huge strides in female representation in games? Do sports bras not exist there? Can we top that off with the idea of a blunt object going towards someone's chest? Lady lump armor will make things slide into the -blam!-ing sternum. You know, the bone right in front of a shit ton of vital organs.
So what's the solution for this problem?
1. Cut a hole in the box.
2. Make sure your artists/modelers are well versed in proper female anatomy.
3. Buy a sports bra.
4. Take the awesome male armor you had before and put a woman in it. Don't get me wrong! People come in all shapes and sizes. Breastplates will sometimes need to be a bit bigger for some people and some people will need slimmer sets of power armor. Sometimes people wear form-fitting armor, but that still doesn't excuse outlining the breasts on the armor. Wanting armor that caters to the female anatomy doesn't justify overcompensating for the female anatomy. Armored breasts do not need to be lifted and separated when one encapsulated piece suffices in the first place.
Done.
You think I'm kidding? I'm -blam!-ing serious.

So...you don't want women overly sexualized/ over sexualized armor? I see that you want that by the description. I agree, that's what I dislike in many games that do that but I don't quite understand this thread. If anyone can further explain this that'd be great. Also the first Mass Effect got big because people thought it was a porn game...how wrong they were! Haha.
-
-blam!- that! It's $48! That's almost a new game!
-
Didn't Reach do a good job of proving that Bungie can do exactly this? Identify the character as female without giving her a ridiculous breastplate? I think Bungie knows what's up.

i thought
1. Cut a hole in the box
2.Put your junk in the box?

Maybe because they did it that way in medieval times? I have no idea but shaped armor makes sense especially in their nobility status, I am sure some armos don't emphasize size but maybe its for mobile over a huge extruding plate that shakes around
-
I'd side with this opinion if it were a medieval game, where you'd actually have to worry about a blunt object going toward your chest. But, since it takes place in the future, where there are guns, it doesn't make sense to have armor anyway. A lot of the time it's more important for things to be easily identifiable than realistic. It's more interesting to design characters around their gender. It helps them not blend together.
-
I feel bad for the artists, on one hand if they make the women sexy people call them pervs, and if they make them manly people think that they are well not kind. If I was the artist I'd might end up just saying " -blam!- this the player is a damn robot!" Partially cause drawing boobs all day would have unfavorable consequences.

Umm Boobs?

This is the dumbest thread ever. Of all time.

Small Boobs are Best Boobs.

A strike to the sternum gets me down in the dumps as well. I'm with ya.

It's not about the body, it's about the body language.... And her personality!
-
Are you a guy or a girl?
-
I always felt the same, but i was pleased when the live action came out and afterwards people noticed the titan was a woman. I did not notice at first so unisex armour all round :D
-
First time Iv seen someone make a fair and serius point on breast I agree that some female archetypes in gaming have assets that far exceed what they need to be. Keep it sensible and it can look sexy but over sizing and going for over emphasising armour can just look rediculace
-
They did it fine in Halo, the armour wasn't even different. I'll rage quit if I see any retarded sexualisation of anything in Destiny, it's ridiculous. Boob plates don't even make sense.
-
The easiest thing to do would be to simply eliminate female characters from the game. Right Cortana 5? Right??????
-
I'm in complete agreement about the need for chest armor to appear sensible and functional rather than sensual. I certainly would want my female character to appear as well-protected as she is supposed to be when out on missions, same as any man should.

Edited by MajorTugh: 6/26/2013 5:44:14 PMLet me put my post in simpler terms if I wouldn't want my sister too where it I don't want to see it.

I agree with the points made in this post.

The Marine chick in Wreck it Ralph?

100% for making female characters resemble some sliver of a real female. The Diablo 3 Female Barb was the baddest ass character I've seen in a long, long time, largely because she was tough and tumble without any generic gender accommodations made. To bungie's credit, Kat was also a bionic-armed bad ass in Reach. I have faith they'll stay the course and ensure that females are warriors first and foremost. And I hope that female players play Destiny; I haven't done much gaming with women beyond a few seasons, but it was a good time and they were fun to play and chat with. No reason for the game to ostracize them (Obvi, the community needs to grow up to regarding female players too, but that's a different discussion for a different thread).

He has a point

its a videogame, porn

I love seeing threads like this. I'll admit that I do enjoy playing as female characters even though I'm a guy (don't like staring at man ass all day). What I don't like, however, is playing as a stripper with a machine gun/sword/rocket launcher/knife/etc. I like strong female protagonists. I think to Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in Alien, Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs, or the character of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series (book series, I haven't seen the movies yet). I think Bungie will do a good job of making sure we don't have stripper super soldiers and don't exaggerate female anatomy (not a fan of huge boobs, personally). I think we can all settle on average, and then having those average boobs covered up by appropriate armor that would be worn by real women in real combat.
