12/23/2014 Edit: This thread was made before Destiny was released. We didn't know how things were going to be yet!
There's a certain type of response that I'm expecting for this thread (immature and full of boob jokes), and then there's a certain kind of response I'm looking for (responsible conversation). I'm not telling either of you types of posters to leave. It's okay.
I would like to talk about breasts. Specifically, armored breasts. I don't want Destiny to go down a dark path of poor anatomy.
Allow me to say that the more unbalanced the ratio of female to male artists there are on a project, the higher the likelihood of us seeing game armor like this. It's annoying enough to have two melons on your chest, but when they're held up by gravity-defying pieces or metal, that's painful. Bras filled with cushioning and breathable material can still be painful. Imagine chicken wire holding up your moobs.
But that's an over-the-top fantasy MMO, not a space opera. So let's pick a space opera. Why does the world of Mass Effect require lady lumps on armor? Why are those emphasized boob pieces necessary in a game that made some huge strides in female representation in games? Do sports bras not exist there? Can we top that off with the idea of a blunt object going towards someone's chest? Lady lump armor will make things slide into the -blam!-ing sternum. You know, the bone right in front of a shit ton of vital organs.
So what's the solution for this problem?
1. Cut a hole in the box.
2. Make sure your artists/modelers are well versed in proper female anatomy.
3. Buy a sports bra.
4. Take the awesome male armor you had before and put a woman in it. Don't get me wrong! People come in all shapes and sizes. Breastplates will sometimes need to be a bit bigger for some people and some people will need slimmer sets of power armor. Sometimes people wear form-fitting armor, but that still doesn't excuse outlining the breasts on the armor. Wanting armor that caters to the female anatomy doesn't justify overcompensating for the female anatomy. Armored breasts do not need to be lifted and separated when one encapsulated piece suffices in the first place.
Done.
You think I'm kidding? I'm -blam!-ing serious.
-
You're talking like if you we're to be inside of the game, knowing how every type of armor feels on your boobs. BTW: Not hating, just saying
-
I think it is a more fit thing for a game to clearly distinguish a male from female though, Recon did make a very good point.
I don't want to follow another player around for 10-15 minutes and realize that I've been staring at some guy's ass.
If you want your character to the same as the male models with the flat solid chest and such I have a novel idea... Make a male character. I don't understand why you'd want butchy man ladies. There should be a clear way to distinguish yourself as a male or female, otherwise why bother picking a gender in the first place?
-
For some it doesn't matter what image of a female is presented ... it will always be wrong. and then they will equally complain hat there is not enough female leads presented in games ... a no-win situation. The real question is ... why do these people get so fixated on the appearance of the female lead? And why is the same attention not paid to the male image?
-
As you said, some will need the extra chest room, its uncomftable squishing them flat and for someone like (some famous celebrity with huge breasts) to try and fit in a flat chested armour isn't going to happen, and armour would look pretty ridiculous with a massive rectangle or something hanging out by half a foot-a foot from the rest would still look naff. The armour from the first thing you are right about an im sure bungie haven't done it distastefully

Edited by Silent Spectre: 7/20/2013 7:41:43 AMFrom what I've seen from the armor so far it looks like Bungie is going at it accurately. I've seen posts from people who have a hard time distinguishing the female characters, probably because their looking for boobs. But the thing is the armor is keeping them from being prevalent, I can tell by the frame since I can't distinguish by face. The male titan is pretty big, the female Titan is foreboding yet somewhat elegant at the same time. Male Hunters look cool but the females look more agile and graceful. Warlocks... I can tell but I have no real quality to compare other than purely the frame when there's that much cloth, the females a visibly slimmer though.

They did well with Reach and the female armor types. I see Destiny kinda following that look.
-
I hate fan service. I lose a great deal of respect for creators that sell out to this.
-
So true. I really hate things like the Mortal Kombat outfits.
-
First of all BEWBS secondly, from what I've seen destiny is avoiding this splendidly. There's even a picture of a Titan whose gender is totally escaping me. I could pull up a bunch of concepts and renders but I'm on a mobile device. I'll sit down on a computer later an make an entire thread base on this topic, both male and female.

breast and stuff aside this raises an interesting point , outfits. in dragons dogma 3/4 of the armor and attire was gender neutral , but there was about 1/3 of it that was female only stuff that only female arisen and pawns could wear , im wondering if bungie will take a similar approach to the clothing and armor in destiny. and on the side there was a maiden's dress that could be worn by ether gender , which in addition to be funny also something needed to acquire a trophy/achievement and helped you get past a band of feminist thieves...
-
I always see the worst female character outfits in the anime/japanesey style games so I'm not concerned about bungie making it just stupidly distracting like I don't want to see a girl that looks like a fetish porn star fighting next to me in a public event but let me just knock on 343 for a second, cortana in halo 4 was a little weird but the previous halos were fine. Basically I don't want to be able to tell a bunch of horny dudes designed it and if it was a different dev I'd be worried about it but not with bungie

Edited by Commander Tempu: 6/30/2013 5:41:55 PMI think that it should be a blend of stylish and gives you a in between of protection with that style of good taste. Some games want to give sexuality with some appeal with out being over zealous about it. Yet if you are going to Tank like in Destiny you need good protection to withstand those blows. Chest is an easy target to hit. If you look there are many examples of breastplates for women in many MMO's, Fps, Movies and Art. Magazines like Heavy Metal have some great art work as does fantasy art books. The problem is to make it functional and protect the female. In real life protection comes first so those in the Army to those in a Police Department Think about protection in combat situations. If you look at the uniforms they wear with the body armor it is not at all comfortable. Yet we will see fantasy armor as being more stylish to give the female a more provocative image. Sci-Fi we see even at times a more subtle look but still has the chest area for protection. Sometimes even style. Blending the two to make a Mythic Sci-Fi female function in the world of destiny will depend on the class you choose. I feel that the chest are should not be over emphasized for sex appeal but then again not hidden under so much armor you cannot tell a male from a female. Armor offers protection. We see allot of this in World of Warcraft or even Halo. Mass Effect had a variety but each game must find the right balance and some people want more say in how they customize there char. We are not all the same. Skyrim did well with this. Each person wants to have that look that belongs to you. -Commander that guy who loves the female art form Or rather the ascetic appeal of such.
-
So... would you care to help the artists with lessons on female anatomy? GET IT? BECAUSE... you know... >.> <.< Okay, I'll leave now.
-
Agreed, appropriate female armour would be nice, no fan service outfits bungie please.
-
Every time I see this thread I can't help but to open it up. It makes me all warm inside :D why do you girls have to be so attractive!!!
-
"Breast thread" - I'm ashamed to say this made me smile =) Seriously though, men and women have different anatomies so additional armour in certain places on the female form is to be expected. Although the exaggeration in ME3 is not welcome.
-
This is the most hilarious and yet best reasoned post on Bungie's site. It was as if you made me laugh hard enough to have milk squirt from my nose which then forced me to contemplated how my nasal cavity and esophagus are connected. Kudos.
-
Interesting topic. I agree with the concern stated. Bungie has seemed to have a good concept of this. I'm trusting they'll continue to find that balance needed to define the characters and their bodies.

Edited by MajorTugh: 6/30/2013 4:46:57 PMcortanafive what is your idea of the perfect armor design for the female guardian? I am curious to see how you would like it to look like plus if you could post picturre of a female guardian my friend Millo and I would like that alot and I agrree with your stance on this topic
-
I agree, OP. :-) P.S I love boobs.

BBBBBEEEEEEWWWWWBBBBBS!BSB!B!BSB!S SBOOOOBBBIIEIEIISISSESE
-
Why don't we all just leave the designers alone they've done a good job so far
-
Any kind of harassment, no matter what medium it is presented in, is not right. Although I agree with your post, I think your chosen name which portrays the very thing you have issue with is a tad hypercritical.
-
So...you don't want women overly sexualized/ over sexualized armor? I see that you want that by the description. I agree, that's what I dislike in many games that do that but I don't quite understand this thread. If anyone can further explain this that'd be great. Also the first Mass Effect got big because people thought it was a porn game...how wrong they were! Haha.
