12/23/2014 Edit: This thread was made before Destiny was released. We didn't know how things were going to be yet!
There's a certain type of response that I'm expecting for this thread (immature and full of boob jokes), and then there's a certain kind of response I'm looking for (responsible conversation). I'm not telling either of you types of posters to leave. It's okay.
I would like to talk about breasts. Specifically, armored breasts. I don't want Destiny to go down a dark path of poor anatomy.
Allow me to say that the more unbalanced the ratio of female to male artists there are on a project, the higher the likelihood of us seeing game armor like this. It's annoying enough to have two melons on your chest, but when they're held up by gravity-defying pieces or metal, that's painful. Bras filled with cushioning and breathable material can still be painful. Imagine chicken wire holding up your moobs.
But that's an over-the-top fantasy MMO, not a space opera. So let's pick a space opera. Why does the world of Mass Effect require lady lumps on armor? Why are those emphasized boob pieces necessary in a game that made some huge strides in female representation in games? Do sports bras not exist there? Can we top that off with the idea of a blunt object going towards someone's chest? Lady lump armor will make things slide into the -blam!-ing sternum. You know, the bone right in front of a shit ton of vital organs.
So what's the solution for this problem?
1. Cut a hole in the box.
2. Make sure your artists/modelers are well versed in proper female anatomy.
3. Buy a sports bra.
4. Take the awesome male armor you had before and put a woman in it. Don't get me wrong! People come in all shapes and sizes. Breastplates will sometimes need to be a bit bigger for some people and some people will need slimmer sets of power armor. Sometimes people wear form-fitting armor, but that still doesn't excuse outlining the breasts on the armor. Even casual form-fitting clothes do not work that way. What you get is the "uniboob."
Wanting armor that caters to the female anatomy doesn't justify overcompensating for the female anatomy. Armored breasts do not need to be lifted and separated when one encapsulated piece suffices in the first place.
Done.
You think I'm kidding? I'm -blam!-ing serious.

Armor in which the breasts are individually shaped is extremely impractical. Say you're in a sword fight. The point of armor is to deflect an oncoming sword. Armor with two breasts on it directs the sword TOWARDS the sternum, which is almost as dangerous as wearing no armor at all. The historical evidence supports this; Ancient warrior women such as Vikings would never had two breast plates. Not that armor can't also be in some way flattering, but if it's realism we're striving for (which I know isn't always the case), the ladies will not have their individual breasts discernible. So those are my thoughts on the matter.

I can understand people have valid, arguments and opinions of like having armor and stuff for women actually be and look practical. But art and video games in general are an extremely stylized and visual medium, and as a huge fan of the female anatomy especially breasts, and while it might some how alienate some of the female gamers, the reality is still the traget market is male gamers and mostly all of them wouldnt turn down some nice awesome cleavage i know i sure as hell wouldnt lol. But also at the same time, its a futuristic game they could have force fields and space magic and all kinds of stuff to protect them and still show exposed skin and not needing to have armor cover it all up. ^__^
-
This post is old. But I like whoever bumped it. I agree on all fronts, I like curves, but I also find utilitarian armor beautiful in its own way, so long as I can tell its a chick. Destiny renders back that up, so I'm happy.
-
Why was this dead thread bumped?
-
Or maybe if girls were more interested in games they could go to school for game design and start their own all female game company and do everything their way because it's their own company. In the meantime, political correctness can suck it.
-
I see what ya did there
-
I don't really pay attention to my characters chest lol. Plus, I like wearing alot of armor so people don't know I'm a girl.
-
I was looking at that picture of the Hunter, trying to figure out what was billowing off the enemies and I realized the Hunter has boob armor. Thought you should know if you didn't already.

It's speculated that this is a female titan http://www.destinythegame.com/content/dam/atvi/bungie/destiny/web/multimedia/Titan.jpg Although the concept of the female hunter does have breastage, I'm sure Bungie will handle female character armor tastefully and probably with no jiggle.
-
Well said C5. Do you think the female version of this Titan fits the bill?
-
Bungie has done well with female anatomy in Reach. I mean there was a noticeable difference but they didn't mutilate armor to make breasts more noticeable. But they did a good job with making butts rather noticeable. But the Armor wasn't modified to achieve this since Spartan IIIs didn't wear full metal speedos.
-
Love the article and there is no doubt you put a lot of time and effort into it, but despite your valid argument concerning its lack of structural usefulness, I think the female armor in Mass Effect was done well. I enjoy playing with a female character that is clearly female. Despite my intense love for bungie, I actually think they could use some help in this department based on past games. The females in past games looked manly and rugged(Reach females had gotten better). While my Commander Shepherd wore hot, believable armor and still saved the galaxy. I appreciate my females not looking like a skinny man. Please bungie, atleast hit the major points on the females: boobs, hips, waist, and legs should all be obviously female. The concept art looks good, but it's still up for speculation if we will have attractive female faces this time....<wishes on a star> LOL
-
Hey, this is Bungie we're talking about. Theyre not the kind of company to over-sexualize their game.
-
I think sex appeal can be a good thing if its not overdone.
-
Boobs are awesome. That is all.
-
I do not think you're kidding, and I agree completely. Chest pieces that would be appropriate in a performance of Wagner's "Ring" cycle, I can do without.
-
It's okay, you don't have to be that ticked off about it. But it does bother me as well. First though, not all of Mass Effect has female characters with large breasts popping out. Some of female Shepard's armor is the best female armor you'll see for female characters in video games. This is more visible in Mass Effect 3, but there are some example in ME2 like Inferno Armor (sorry if I spelled that wrong), and Cerberus armor. I have to say that I am more concerned with different races having breasts when they shouldn't. I'm referring to Argonians and Khajiit in Skyrim. Argonians are lizard people for crying out loud, and they have breasts? What it usually comes down to is that Bethesda would have had to make a whole new armor set just for female Argonians and Khajiit. Personally I think it's worth the extra time. I'm concerned that Bungie has put breasts on female Exos which just doesn't make sense to me. They are robots, what would they need breasts for? It's either for infiltration (to blend in) or for...you know...the other thing...
-
If you got it flaunt it guuurrrlll!
-
I see what you mean. And I might get a little off topic but i do think they should put breasts in the game and honestly should make the player (not the armour) customizable. I loved reach but every time i played it (especially when you take your helmet off in the first and last mission, i wish i could see my face. They need to add some feature where you can have your kinect sensor take a picture of a couple angles of your head and put them together so if you ever take off your helmet, you see yourself. Or if people dont want or can't afford a kinect sensor. Take a few picture of there head with a camera, upload them to pc, pc to USB, and then USB to xbox, i think that'd be awesome. Seeing yourself in a video game. And maybe be able to adjust the body figure a little. Like obviously your a soldier so your not going to be this fat cow but maybe adjust height, BREAST SIZE ( this topic) and maybe. Few other features.
-
I think that boobs are very good. And there should be a clear difference between male and females chests when it comes to the models. How about this.. the player gets to choose how big their characters boobs are?

Reported.

Edited by lildevilz: 2/17/2013 12:31:51 PMAs long as there's no stupidly ridiculous armour, such as those seen in MMO's which only protect certain assests.. i'll be happy.
-
I want my character to have a massive lump in his pants, you know, to help him defend himself from attackers. But if that lump is too small or too large, or too curved or not curved enough I'm going to be seriously pissed. If I can't have a mega lump that isn't too mega I will be disappointed. I also want lady characters to have access to this lump if want it.
-
You're talking like if you we're to be inside of the game, knowing how every type of armor feels on your boobs. BTW: Not hating, just saying
