12/23/2014 Edit: This thread was made before Destiny was released. We didn't know how things were going to be yet!
There's a certain type of response that I'm expecting for this thread (immature and full of boob jokes), and then there's a certain kind of response I'm looking for (responsible conversation). I'm not telling either of you types of posters to leave. It's okay.
I would like to talk about breasts. Specifically, armored breasts. I don't want Destiny to go down a dark path of poor anatomy.
Allow me to say that the more unbalanced the ratio of female to male artists there are on a project, the higher the likelihood of us seeing game armor like this. It's annoying enough to have two melons on your chest, but when they're held up by gravity-defying pieces or metal, that's painful. Bras filled with cushioning and breathable material can still be painful. Imagine chicken wire holding up your moobs.
But that's an over-the-top fantasy MMO, not a space opera. So let's pick a space opera. Why does the world of Mass Effect require lady lumps on armor? Why are those emphasized boob pieces necessary in a game that made some huge strides in female representation in games? Do sports bras not exist there? Can we top that off with the idea of a blunt object going towards someone's chest? Lady lump armor will make things slide into the -blam!-ing sternum. You know, the bone right in front of a shit ton of vital organs.
So what's the solution for this problem?
1. Cut a hole in the box.
2. Make sure your artists/modelers are well versed in proper female anatomy.
3. Buy a sports bra.
4. Take the awesome male armor you had before and put a woman in it. Don't get me wrong! People come in all shapes and sizes. Breastplates will sometimes need to be a bit bigger for some people and some people will need slimmer sets of power armor. Sometimes people wear form-fitting armor, but that still doesn't excuse outlining the breasts on the armor. Even casual form-fitting clothes do not work that way. What you get is the "uniboob."
Wanting armor that caters to the female anatomy doesn't justify overcompensating for the female anatomy. Armored breasts do not need to be lifted and separated when one encapsulated piece suffices in the first place.
Done.
You think I'm kidding? I'm -blam!-ing serious.

Ok, here's another thing for people who want to dig deeper on the subject. A friend on Facebook sent this to me.
Webmaster, Maybe you could pass this on to the development team. The main character in Oni (that woman) I think should have bigger breasts! I mean look what that has done for Tomb Raider, I know it caught my eye when I saw those. Just a suggestion but a good one I feel. You got to think who is buying these games. Teenage boys obsessed with Playboy models. BTW the site looks great. Thanks, Bryan Haggerty Bryan- We are not interested in perpetuating sexist stereotypes that create impossible expectations of women in the real world, who should be treated with the same reverence as any other human being regardless of their physical appearance. Rather than pandering to the misconceptions of adolescent males with no mature perspective, we should be trying to work for positive change. That's what I'm doing anyway. Peace to my sisters and peace to you
Right...

I think Bungie did good with marine and Spartan female armor, so I think they will still do good for Destiny.
-
I think the female Spartan armours were done quite well. So there's some hope.
-
mmmm, lets see ... basically it is a game which is made for entertainment. From an entertaining/escapism viewpoint would you vote for; 1) truth and accuracy, or 2) exploration of the mind Next we will be debating the validity of the non-human based characters, or the development of space craft. Its entertainment ... let your mind wonder (even if your hands cant)

I personally as a man, hate this poorly designs of armored female warriors, I do love the clad full armored females, they make sense and they don't look like "Escorts" with their female parts all exposed. That kind of the design I hate. Bungie showed a great design with the female Spartan armor and I spect a good design for Destiny.

That video made me smile. Thank you for that, OP.

Edited by Cortana Five: 2/17/2013 3:00:53 AMI'm here to interrupt this thread with what Kat would have looked like, had she been poorly designed. Courtesy of rawksaur.

This is what I want. But actually, I agree with what you said and it sounds like a solid argument...but boobs :(
-
...sorry what? I was distracted by something.
-
Stay classy guys...
-
You had me at cut a hole in the box. Though I'm sure you did that on purpose.
-
I was pleasantly surprised. I agree with you, I'd rather not have female characters be overly sexualized in Destiny. Thankfully I don't think Bungie will do something like that.
-
Well for what its worth,Bungie has a pretty good track record at least in their previous HAlo games. The worst they did to females in those games is make them a bit smaller looking. But I suppose we shall have to wait and see.
-
Kinda crazy how normal it has been to come to accept the female space lump armor design once you think about it. I mean... we've solved this problem already for our current century haven't we?
-
Mmm. Sounds good!
-
You know another thing I'd like to point out is, this is a two way flight. You don't think there's games where men are portrayed sexually, instead of practically? What about the sleeveless armor, used in Gears of War 3 to show of their muscles? What about Kratos in the God of War series? He doesn't even have any armor!
-
Edited by DefiniteInfinity: 2/17/2013 2:22:06 AMI suggest that Bungie introduce the Cock Sock in Destiny to attract more female gamers and broaden the reach of our community. It would be a sheath of solid armor that fits over the penis, holding it out at a downward-facing 45 degree angle. I assume nobody in this thread has a problem with this, right?
-
The sexualization of women in media is hardly anything new. TV, movies, advertising, gaming... I think the major difference is that in gaming, people construct the imagery, some times from scratch. Sure, it's manipulated in movies and adverts, but gaming can create completely unrealistic proportions, armor, or outfits. It's certainly geared toward a particular audience, but it hardly promotes healthy self imagery. Some are more overt than others *cough* DOA Xtreme volleyball *cough*. It would be nice to see more accurate portrayals, and less obvious "marketing tool" type characters.
-
First I laughed at the title, then i ventured in to witness the absurdity. Then I read your unexpectedly legitimate argument, and it made me think. I thought the only disadvantage the geomtry of such an armor piece would offer would be a wider hitbox. I agree with you fully. Female armor should only differ from male armor in the proportions and volume of specic areas in order to comfortably accommodate the female figure, all while maintaining the same overall geometry. In other words no unnecessary lady lumps.
-
Holy -blam!- that video is incredible.

Edited by Noble Iron Sky: 2/17/2013 2:10:56 AMArmor can still be feminine and protective. This is the armor my wife has. It's feminine, and yet still armor. We have the whole suit, though she only wore the top for this outfit. The full set can be found here. http://armstreet.com/catalogue/full/fantasy-stainless-full-womens-armor-set-6.jpg

I came in expecting a plea for breasts in Destiny and left pleasantly surprised. Good thread, my friend.
