12/23/2014 Edit: This thread was made before Destiny was released. We didn't know how things were going to be yet!
There's a certain type of response that I'm expecting for this thread (immature and full of boob jokes), and then there's a certain kind of response I'm looking for (responsible conversation). I'm not telling either of you types of posters to leave. It's okay.
I would like to talk about breasts. Specifically, armored breasts. I don't want Destiny to go down a dark path of poor anatomy.
Allow me to say that the more unbalanced the ratio of female to male artists there are on a project, the higher the likelihood of us seeing game armor like this. It's annoying enough to have two melons on your chest, but when they're held up by gravity-defying pieces or metal, that's painful. Bras filled with cushioning and breathable material can still be painful. Imagine chicken wire holding up your moobs.
But that's an over-the-top fantasy MMO, not a space opera. So let's pick a space opera. Why does the world of Mass Effect require lady lumps on armor? Why are those emphasized boob pieces necessary in a game that made some huge strides in female representation in games? Do sports bras not exist there? Can we top that off with the idea of a blunt object going towards someone's chest? Lady lump armor will make things slide into the -blam!-ing sternum. You know, the bone right in front of a shit ton of vital organs.
So what's the solution for this problem?
1. Cut a hole in the box.
2. Make sure your artists/modelers are well versed in proper female anatomy.
3. Buy a sports bra.
4. Take the awesome male armor you had before and put a woman in it. Don't get me wrong! People come in all shapes and sizes. Breastplates will sometimes need to be a bit bigger for some people and some people will need slimmer sets of power armor. Sometimes people wear form-fitting armor, but that still doesn't excuse outlining the breasts on the armor. Wanting armor that caters to the female anatomy doesn't justify overcompensating for the female anatomy. Armored breasts do not need to be lifted and separated when one encapsulated piece suffices in the first place.
Done.
You think I'm kidding? I'm -blam!-ing serious.

Compared to most MMO style games Destiny has done pretty darn good. No revealing armour and no Tomb Raider lady lumps. Other than being thinner than males I have trouble telling male/female titans apart.
-
Holy shit is this serious? Are you really that upset about this? Let's take for instance what you're saying... Why are they protruding. Put into another perspective, a cup for a man, usually in compression shorts or something identical. A cup protrudes to encase for protection; a hard shell for protection in a sensitive spot. Do you realise that not all females are able to fit into a universal article? Tight to the chest with two shells to encase the breast. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. With the exo race I can see where it's strange, but anything else is just. Not every one is built the same. Get over it.

Destiny is super progressive with this, I feel like this post was meant for another game.

Edited by Kovathos: 12/24/2014 6:06:16 AMNo female character stands out except for the queen really. Even then, I think she's pretty covered up all things considered if I remember right, haven't seen her for awhile since I try to avoid them cut scenes when I can. Other than that I can't think of any issue for females in this game. As for the lumps on chest pieces for female armour. For mass effect in particular, I don't see anything wrong with it other than for how much it sticks out which pretty much would imply all of them have fairly large breasts. Average females even ones on the larger side of the averages, don't really need that much extra space in a standard piece of chest armour, at least not the kind of space implied in mass effect. As for other games. Well in a market mostly dominated by males for the longest time and still is, what can you expect? I know females that actually like wearing the hardly anything armour or cosmetic items like that. I can understand why they would too.

Edited by brain surgion: 11/11/2014 6:18:12 PMI've never thought that the women in destiny were sexualized. It might be because I played final fantasy 14 before I got here, and just about all of the female armor/gear in that game was bikinis. Some of the male gear was too lol. I actually was happy at the lack of fan service, but that's just me. Edit: good to see you on here Cortana, I loved your theory about the AIs

Edited by dunkin_bob: 11/9/2013 4:05:08 PMOk 3 things 1/ I ride a sports motorcycle and my wife rides pillion. We both wear 'armoured' protective clothes. It is pretty obvious which one is the girl 2/sports bras don't make her bumps disappear the just don't move around so much when we play sports 3/she often moans that when creating her character in video games the boobs aren't big enough .... I get what you are saying that maybe every female character doesn't have to look like a surgically modified adult move actress wrapped in skin tight outfits with armour designs to exaggerate their curves and loads of flesh showing .... But some girls actually like that as their avatar. Most men/boys don't look like Marcus Phoenix but most male gamers don't want to play these games using a character with a slight beer gut etc ... I wouldn't worry about destiny. As others have said bungie has a good eye for these things and did a great job in reach with the female Spartans. Oh yeah and I believe that if you shot very curvy chest armour with a bullet it is actually likely to deflect the round up into the characters face pretty easily as well .... That must be why everyone wears helmets !

I think the exos should all look the same--they're machines--they don't need to be anatomically correct. If you pick the exo race, the choice for male/female becomes disabled. That way, you don't have to worry about overcompensated female armor anymore!

Are you a feminist OP?

I will never be happy until they implement Boobs the size of beds. o3o

Can someone explain the purpose of the chitinous breasts the Hive Wizards sport? It makes so little sense on so many levels.
-
um....yeah... what's the point of this post? It's a game and people like pretty things to look at. I like my girl looking like a girl and since I can't bling her out in this game at least she looks feminine in her armor.
-
Well the tough thing as an artist is showing that a character is female through armor. This requires more curvature than blocker male pieces. Breast are an incredibly easy way to show that a character is male or female when you cannot see their face.

Armor in which the breasts are individually shaped is extremely impractical. Say you're in a sword fight. The point of armor is to deflect an oncoming sword. Armor with two breasts on it directs the sword TOWARDS the sternum, which is almost as dangerous as wearing no armor at all. The historical evidence supports this; Ancient warrior women such as Vikings would never had two breast plates. Not that armor can't also be in some way flattering, but if it's realism we're striving for (which I know isn't always the case), the ladies will not have their individual breasts discernible. So those are my thoughts on the matter.
