Apple Could Destroy XBox

Bumped across this article in my daily stock news searches. Source
Microsoft has blown it with the Xbox, and now it's at risk of Apple totally destroying the business, Nat Brown, the founder of the original Xbox project, recently wrote on his blog. "Apple, if it chooses to do so, will simply kill Playstation, Wii-U and xBox by introducing an open 30%-cut app/game ecosystem for Apple-TV," Brown writes.
What do you think? Apple has dabbled in the possibility of entering the video game market before (if you recall, they even thought about acquiring Bungie back in the day) and there is no denying that the Xbox user experience definitely isn't as good as it could be. What would you think of an Apple console-like device (or as this guy alludes to, a digital distribution network)? We've seen a lot of companies start thinking about moving into gaming (Steambox, Ouya) where it has generally been a duopoly for gamers between Microsoft/Sony.

  • I don't see it happening. The reason they sell "games" on ios is because you already have the phone. People aren't going to go out and buy an apple device to play ios games only. Also, as far as I recall, with bungie - They went to apple and offered them the rights, and they turned them down. Saying it didn't look like it was going anywhere.

  • I find it funny that the original Xbox founder claims Apple could kill Sony and Nintendo... This guy clearly doesn't understand how exclusives work. If it wasn't for Halo, there would be no Xbox 360 because the original Xbox would have been a massive failure.

  • Apple can't compete with Xbox if all they plan on doing is adding a box or client service for their apple TV's to have digital content only. How many big game sales come from Digital distribution that aren't arcade quality? How many console users download full games from the marketplace in games on demand? Apple can't touch Microsoft with the way they do things right now when it comes to serious in home gaming.

I would not buy an Apple console, because if it operates like any other apple devices then I'd rather receive a 5 hour long anal cavity search by O.J. Simpson than pay good money for something like that. I mean sure the xbox is quite limited but Apple products take the word 'limits' and give it a whole new meaning. No doubt though that they would do fairly well in the console market, at least for a while.

  • Actually with so many apple devices in the homes and apple TV coming out it is very possible to put a strangle hold on the video game industry. The problem is unless Apple get developers on their side and the consumers their "domination" will have a short life, I mean how many people trust apple? Not many.

  • If Apple could destroy the Xbox, Playstation and Wii that easily, then they already would have. Therefore, calling BS.

  • Any generic Apple device would have to be vastly underpowered compared to a dedicated gaming system - no point packing a GTX 670 if half the customers only want to use it as a TV. And as we all know, Apple's products have price tags far in excess of what the hardware warrants. This is fine if you're selling a phone, where very little processing power is needed and a slick design is the main selling point. But there's no way it'll attract the hardcore gaming audience.

    • Frankly I think it's a gross overestimation of Apple's capacities. Not to mention that I wouldn't doubt that they would try to follow their current model of high priced and yearly releases with only minor changes between them.

    • Destroy consoles by making a damn casual console with angry birds and cut the rope on a big screen? Not giving up xbox for that, that's for sure.

    • Destroy no, I personally wouldn't buy it because I would expect it to be 1000$ and hav half the capabilites of the 360, but apple fanboys would buy it right up

      • Not necessarily. Even things like OUYA do things that Apple would never allow in their products.

      • I don't think it could destroy the competition if they never decided to have lower prices on their products. But if they went against the grain and there own standards then watch out.

      • Nah. In three years I wouldn't pay $600 for a copy of the Xbox 360.

      • I guess it's possible. A more powerful Apple TV positioned as an all-in-one living room box would be a compelling alternative. People could use their iPhones and iPads to download games, then use them as controllers to play those games. And they could stream games from their mobile devices when they go to a friend's house. An included remote/controller - just as uncomfortable as Apple's headphones - could work for those without an iDevice. Apple would have to decide what it wants to do with games like CoD, though. While having big titles would help it out at first, one of the advantages to developing for mobile devices is that you don't have to go up against huge juggernauts. I think Nintendo should've done something like this with its new console. The dinky tablet controller is a gimmick like the Wiimote, except it's worse. And, just like the Wii, nobody's bringing their awesome third-party titles because they don't want to have to deal with the gimmicks. Unlike Sony and MS, Nintendo has no ecosystem of services or hardware to fall back on. All they've got are really good, really popular first-party titles. So, fine, say -blam!- the haters and go full wiitard. Build a 7" Android tablet that streams to your TV, and unleash the mobile developers (and their payment model) on the living room. Stick games and apps and shit online and make up any losses on hardware by overcharging for software. Break $50 Mario into 5 successive games and charge $12 for each because who's going to know the difference. Little Bobby's mom will think it's better than paying $60 for "that violent Playbox 350 game".

      • Apple would need their own inhouse game studio, if Apple buys Nintendo, be worried...

      • I'd like to say it's not possible but before the Xbox came out I didn't think it was possible for Microsoft to compete with Nintendo or Sony.

      • I doubt Apple would produce a gaming device with serious horse-power. It would be in its own ball-court, probably facing down the Ouya and Gamestick.

      • I sincerely doubt anything innovative from Apple will be produced any time soon. It just won't, the Steam Box could, perhaps, but Apple, I doubt them making any service such as this (especially without Steve Jobs).

      • I think Apple has room to be disruptive to the industry, but they won't "destroy" proper consoles (consoles may already be dying a death, but that's another trend altogether). I don't think AppleTV is going to be able to run next-gen games or even current gen console games, and there will be demand for those kinds of higher-quality, more complex games. There will also be demand for Angry Birds and various sudoku apps, and for that AppleTV will be great.
