In my class we were tasked with reading the book "A Raisin in the Sun" and then write an epilogue. I did and was told it was too far.
For those of you who have read Raisin in the Sun you can skip this next part.
For those of you who haven't, here is a synopsis: This black family, the Youngers, live in the "ghetto" part of Chicago during the 1950's or so, so racism is quite alive and thriving as it did back then. The Younger's consist of Mama, Walter and Beneatha (the son and daughter of mama, Ruth (Walter's wife) and Travis (The son of ruth and Walter, he is about 9 or so). The plot goes, the Youngers receive a alimony check for Walter's father's passing. Wlater wants to buy a liquor store, Beneatha wants to become a doctor with the money and Mama wants to buy a house in the white neighborhood. So a man from that neighborhood tries to make them an offer not to come, this man is Mr. Lindner. The family refuses the offer, but learns that Walter has lost his third and Beneatha's third of the money because a friend stole it. Walter then contacts the man and wants to take the offer, but in the end refuses it to pride and the family chooses to move into the white neighborhood.
Like I said, in my class we we're asked to write and epilogue, I've been told mine was a bit overboard. You be the judge.
The Youngers are arriving back from picking up their final things from their house. It has been 6 long months of moving, and now they have finally arrived at their new house, a few of the new neighbors are out on their lawns; some of them watching, most glaring at the Youngers.
WALTER: Mama and Ruth why don't you go inside and set down your things. I'm sorry we couldn't pay for the moving men again.
MAMA: It's alright baby, don't worry we're gunna be good off from now on.
Mama and Ruth get out and head to the front, mama carrying her plant.
RUTH "What you gunna plant first mama?
MAMA "I think I'll plant some wild flowers first"
Travis and Walter get out and walk out onto the lawn. Beneatha still in the car, worriedly looking around at all their neighbors. Walter kneels down and says to Travis
WALTER "Like I told you son, you can be anything you want, just don't be like your papa and be a valet driver."
TRAVIS "Ok dad. Hey dad?"
WALTER "Yea"
TRAVIS "Can I go play with some of the neighbor hood boys?"
WALTER "Maybe later"
On the front porch there is a basket that appears to have good fruit with a card addressed to "The -blam!-". Mama picks up the card and suddenly it explodes sending Ruth flying and ripping mama in half. A piece of large shrapnel imbeds into Travis's chest. Beneatha jumps out and rushes to where Walter is holding the bleeding and unconscience Travis.
Beneatha "Keep compression on the wound!"
Walter places Travis on the ground and starts putting pressure on the gaping wound. A crack cries out in the sky amongst the flame. Blood splatters onto Beneatha's face and clothes. She looks up and sees the top corner of Walters head is gone and he falls off to the side. Shocked she forget about Travis who is still bleeding profusely. She comes to her senses and looks down at Travis. The bleeding has slowed but to a lack of blood. Her eyes begin to well up with tears as a voice says,
MR.LINDNER "You should have taken the offer".
Beneatha looks up and sees Mr. Lindner walking off with a rifle. She starts sobbing and crying on the lifeless bloodied body of Travis.
