I believe translating them onto a 3d graph is supposed to give us the answer for the left image.

I've been trying to do that, but I haven't found an adequate program to map a 2D image onto a 3D surface, maybe sphere? Downloading nugraf, as I type this, and I'm going to mess around with it (have no knowledge on it) to see if anything happens.
