Personally, I do believe in the existence of the spirit. As a student of Psychology, I am a firm believer of the existence of spirit. The majority of psychologists believe in the soul in one form or another. (Such as Abraham Maslow, and many others)

I frankly find a metaphysical soul to be hard to believe, simply because personality can be so easily be altered through physical means. I've personally seen how medication can drastically affect emotion, how head injuries can completely warp how a person thinks, or how just emotional trauma alone can effectively program new behaviours into a person. The idea that someone has a consistant, everlasting soul just doesn't fit into that picture very well.
