Whenever I hear about things like the Tampon girl, or the more recent Dog girl, I hear people say things like: "this generation is so messed up," or "what is the world coming to?"
But is anything really changing?
Are these things actually increasing in occurrence, or are we just hearing about them more and more because of the rise of social media and the internet?

"This generation is too dependent on smartphones" My response: Your generation didn't have smartphones at all!

I think it's similar to the gay population... Back in the day "no one" was gay but not true they just were in the closet because of social norms. Now a days people openly are gay and a lot more people are at least bi curious. For the bi ones not all of them are actually bi in the end but wanted to excitement a smaller amount did it just because people do that now...because its more acceptable than not in our social norms?

Edited by Seggi: 1/27/2013 7:38:06 AMI would not be the least surprised if the current generation of teenagers were more perverse than previous ones (Not that that's an inherently bad thing), but I also see no reason to assume that such is the case, rather than that we simply have greater visibility of that perversity.

I have no clue of the things you just mentioned, but our generation, as it is now, will be screwed the way we keep going as a whole.

people have always been pretty shit our latest generations have their own obstacles and neurosis to overcome

I'm not sure what dog girl is, but there are websites devoted to what I think it is.

We hear about them more. People have complained about "kids these days" forever. They're rude, they're disrespectful, "I would never have done that when I was a kid...". It's all self serving bullshit.

I think a mix of both. We certainly hear about it more because we have the capability to know what's going on everywhere all at once. But at the same time the internet provides an audience some of these people have to know they're achieving by doing what they do. Also, the internet provides a method for like-minded weirdos to get together and plan out whatever it is that they plan on doing, whilst giving them a safe haven and a sort of confirmation bias room where they only build off of one another.
