Emoticons: Would you use them?
Or would it drive you away?

Never have been a big fan of them, especially when they are linked to the keystroke build(s) for them. For example, in Trillian, that way I used the (s) to indicate singular and/or plural? Trillian automatically changes that to a cresent moon emoticon. No idea why, but it annoys me.
