A city in Massachusetts will offer coupons to residents in exchange for violent games. According to the Boston Globe, Robert Dolan, mayor of Melrose, Mass., is planning to launch an initiative “aimed at persuading families to get rid of their violent video games, movies, and toys by offering coupons to residents who turn in those items at the city yard.
Residents who throw away items can retrieve a coupon sheet, which will include deals at local businesses and possibly a ‘get out of homework free’ coupon.
“If a family has this discussion and maybe tries to get rid of some of this stuff, they are going to get one of these coupons,” Dolan said. “The child may be getting rid of something they like, but they are getting some value for it.” Dolan “felt compelled to start the program following the Newtown shootings” that took place last month and hopes to be collecting games by February 1st. The program will be called “New Year - New Direction” and “residents who throw away items can retrieve a coupon sheet, which will include deals at local businesses and possibly a ‘get out of homework free’ coupon.”
Somehow I don't think that this will get many people to give up games that they weren't already planning to get rid of. Nor do I think it will help keep children from being exposed to violence.

It's official. The Mayor of Massachusetts is mentally unstable.

Edited by Hawke: 1/6/2014 6:46:32 PMYes. Because violence only exists in video games. There were no wars before video games. These idiots just want a scapegoat.

Edited by Zayah117: 1/12/2013 2:50:16 AMLike getting out of homework or getting a few useless coupons is gonna make somebody give up a game they paid 40-60 bucks for.

Hue, NH LIVE FREE OR DIE!
-
That year old post.

Sadly someway or another children will find ways to espouse themselves to violence, the real problem is how to teach them that people in real life don't respawn and that murder is wrong it seems that we have become to scared to talk to our children which is why parents need to step it up on teaching their children on these important matters

It's amazing how completely incompetent some parts of the world choose to remain.
-
Isn't that basically what gamestop does?

I wrote about something similar about a year ago.

Who bumped this dinosaur?

Edited by KingWhovian: 1/5/2014 8:08:42 PMWhat a waste of perfectly good games. Idiots.
-
This is just the most pointless, stupidly...
‘get out of homework free’ coupon.
...Best idea ever.
-
Glad Massachusetts is up north from me. Maybe I could trade in my old POS games I don't care about.
-
Why are you all so upset that a small, local government is offering the OPTION of exchanging violent media (NOT just video games) for small rewards? It's hardly something to get rankled about.
-
Top lel.
-
Hay parents, do you want to know the best way to know if a videogame is violent? Look on the back to see if it has a Little "M" in the corner, and it's an equivalent to a "R" rated movie. I don't get why this is so hard to some people.
-
And no refunds for the money they spent on it?
-
This won't accomplish anything. What a complete waste of resources.
-
As long as it is optional, then it doesn't sound like a terribly bad idea. While violent games won't have an effect on most of us, there are some disturbed children that become easily misguided by them.
-
But if they tried to do the same thing with firearms, there would be an uproar.
-
I already heard of this. This is stupid. VIDEO GAMES CAUSE VIOLENCE BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT I HEARD ON THE TV! This is what I think goes on when people blame video games for violence.
-
This also happened last year. I guess it's tradition in that town now.
-
This is why I don't live on the -blam!-ing east coast, especially The Peoples Republic of Massachusetts.

I wonder how many copies of Halo Reach and 4 they will get?
