Stupid question: Can exos eat/drink?

So I know that their bodies are strictly mechanical, but in my own fan made stories that my friend and I have made for our guardians we’ve written multiple scenes where they’re in a a restaurant, a bar, or most commonly a Spicy Ramen shop. Only one issue: All six of our guardians are exos. Can these scenes even plausibly happen? I know that according to official lore and cutscenes, cayde liked to eat spicy ramen and would frequently head to bars, but I’m kinda fuzzy on whether or not he actually ate or if it just… splattered on the counter? I’m confused.

Weirdly enough they have all human bodily functions in order to prevent brain melting

    • I’m more curious about how Exo Saint and Osiris can happen, less about their eating/drinking.

      • Well its suggested that they need to function as a human functions or they will kill themselves, this would include other things like having to be anatomically correct, even down there. Man, Elsie's got some great curves.

They can but I'm pretty sure they don't technically have to; it's more like a psychological need or something. I don't know the specifics, my brother is the one who's deeply into the lore. Edit: Also, not a stupid question; asking questions is how we learn. 😁

              • They can, they don’t need to. Long story short they were built with the capacity to slow down DER, Dissociate Exomind Rejection. A process by which the human mind rejects the Exo body, resulting in death. This process is why Exos had their minds reset, in order to prolong their life. Before Beyond Light DER was speculated to have been Clovis propaganda designed to justify Clovis being able to mind wipe the Exos, essentially using them as an obedient private army who could never spill his secrets. Our discoveries on Europa however proved that this wasn’t the case and was in fact the main focus of Clovis’s Exo research there.

              • No, I don’t believe so. Exos weren’t designed to eat and drink and their minds were tampered with to remove the sensations and urges. But the latter was a major problem. The absence of these sensations/cravings makes a mind reject the body, causes them to die because they feel they are dead. So since an Exo doesn’t have a heart to beat or lungs to breath, it’s a programmed sensation. So too then would hunger and thirst. Otherwise the entire torso would have to be redesigned to contain and expel the stuff and that’s just disgusting. And costly, redesigning what was already an otherwise perfected Exo frame. When mental tampering is soooo much easier and established as a solution. So in your scenario, I would write it up like that when they Act like they eating or drinking, they feel like they really are. Because Exos only truly work because they are being fooled into accepting their bodies. So everything has to be designed to enable that self-deception.

                • Bungie is somewhat vague on the matter, though obviously the Spicy Ramen shop lore is typically what most people refer to regarding sustenance for Exos. I would also like to point to the toothbrush item given to Guardians during the Festival of the Lost 2019, if I am recalling that year correctly. Not to mention the Exo Stranger does have a toilet in her Yurt on Europa, which is suggestive of that particular bodily function. Personally, I believe it functions similar to humans in providing energy, in sort of a "bioreactor" as either the backup energy source or their main method of power, which would make more sense than needing to recharge or replace a main energy source after a certain period of time.
