Light level grinding is antiquated system and serves no purpose

Power level is grind that forces players to do activities they have no desire to do. I don't want to raid for power drops. I want to raid for enjoyment of the activity or targeted loot. Just abolish it. It gatekeeps for the sake of gatekeeping.

  • I dont really have an issue with the system itself, just the RNG tied to the drops. All have my pinnacles have dropped in my highest slots so far this week, so no forward progress on my level. I have long thought that this was by design, as it always seems to happen (although later in the pinnacle grind than currently). I do kind of like hopping through activities for the powerful rewards to fill in my slots after I get my pinnacle bump, but im just sitting and waiting now because all of my pinnacles were worthless and a complete waste of time.

    • The worst part is how there's tons of activities where power advantages are equalized or capped below, but next to none where we actually [i]benefit[/i] from being overleveled.

        I agree wholeheartedly. I've been wanting power removed for years now. It's completely irrelevant and can lead newer players to believe that raising your power can raise your damage like if the game was an RPG. Imagine believing that raising your power would raise your power, lol. Unfortunately, I can think of three reasons Bungie likely keeps it in the game: 1. Bungie still believes that grinding = player retention. Doesn't matter the quality or fun. 2. Bungie thinks by keeping it, it'll appear more like an RPG. 3. It's a resource sink. This leads back into reason 1.

      • I've done 1 raid this exp so far and everything but helm 2000 which is the max so.... Optimize better?

        • I actually like Power Levels, however with locked or capped content it no longer makes sense. Either they need to reverse it so Light counts toward an activity or remove it as mentioned. If you grind out 20 levels over content it should count for something, but currently it doesn't mean anything. There is no need to go past a certain point anymore, and so why is there a need for level? Originally the main reason appeared to be that new players aren't tackling end game activities thinking it is normal content, something like Grandmaster Nightfalls for example. However that clearly would be on them for not reading. A similar thing that doesn't matter is crafted weapon levels, after 30 levels it no longer has any relevance other than "big number" as you have nothing left to unlock. In most games, the more you play the stronger you become. We have this still with Adept weapons and Artifice armor. There is no reason that content shouldn't become easier with more time invested. Capping the Power Level at -5 to -25 only tends to drag out the activity anyway, even though it may be easier to "balance" or however you want to justify it. I prefer to have leveling but unless we walk back this level capping it really is not justifiable to keep around.

        • Serves a purpose alright. It makes you play stuff you otherwise won't and it takes your masterwork cores cause you gotta keep using those pesky upgrade modules. Which is bullcrap and should be removed. You already lose the armor or weapon with infusion. It shouldn't cost anything else. Maybe glimmer. Maybe..

            • It's called progression, without it everything loses meaning If Bungie wants to pretend to be an MMO, power grinding comes with the territory It's already stripped to be has bear bones has possible, Bungie even catches everyone up if they played or not, and XP is meaningless after you get 12 artifact points And yet people still complain, people if you want free power , COD is calling you

            • the main reason it was originally added was to keep people playing in D1 cus originally we didnt have light levels iv never fully engaged with it as i felt it was just a waste of time so usually in most power enabled activates im doing less damage and taking more damage keeping it or getting rid of it i wont be effected.. i did delete all my sunset stuff tho so RIP my D2 vault is basically empty

            • I havnt been forced to do anything. I’m about to be 2000 light on my Titian and all I have done is chill in the pale heart and play some crucible.

            • I havent done a single activity for the powerful gear alone and was able to do everything I want so far. Even up to 30 power below hasnt posed as much of a problem as expected. This kinda confirms that power level is obsolete, but not for the reasons you state...

I am 1989 + 9 artifact power on my Warlock and I didn't even play a single Nightfall, Raid or Dungeon since DLC drop. You LITERALLY don't have to, unless you only care about the "pinnacle level" that you don't need anyways to play the game.

            • Since they came out with fireteam power levels I’ve not been concerned in the least about raising my power level. I can use all of my 1900 gear and still do master tier content and raids.

              • I literally never ONCE played an activity for the purpose of gaining light and I’m at 1990 with artifact. Probably a foreign concept to you but if you just play the whole game you purchased, you level up passively. The only reason you wouldn’t be leveling up is if you purposefully delete every higher level item you get.

                • I mean I'm not doing crucible and I'm doing just fine. You do understand Destiny is a hamster wheel right? Albeit the hamster wheel has been turning less recently. Bungie made it so last year we only had to grind the artifact and not a full 50 power per season. Gatekeeping is only on one side in this community though.....and it's on ours.

                    First the obligatory, it's doesn't FORCE you to do anything, I'm almost 2000 w/artifact and I've only been doing activities I like it just takes longer. Now with that out of the way, yea as bungie has minimized the power grind season to season, it's become something of a gratuitous system with so many activities light locked. You've gotta wonder beyond extending playtime, what purpose it serves, as I don't think it adequately serves as a progression tool in it's current state either.

There's no positive power scaling anymore IE no outleveling content. At least make the system beneficial like earlier iterations of the game.

                    • It used to be part of the good old game, when power up [i]meant [/i]power up. The higher your level, the easier it was to do harder content. Simple idea which used to work. No need now. You could be light level, 10,000 but your power would still be capped at 9,995 so what the hell is the point. And you STILL wouldn't be able to do an easy 2 man quest by yourself 🤬

                      It's literally designed to keep you engaged with the game longer, because they know that without light level grind the game would likely lose 20-30% of it's player base in the first week.. Due to lack of content, or just bad content.

                      • They should have came up with a better system at the start of destiny 2. Few better ideas are elder scrolls online hit max lvl than a champion point system to buff stuff Warframes gear based system Or a good old fashioned level system I prefer those three over light based that did and does nothing useful

                      • It also shows in trials. What's the point of having a minimum light requirment when people go in 30 light under and beam people to death easily??

Nothing is stopping you from raiding for enjoyment and nothing forces you to level up.
