I am a native German and pretty decent non native English speaker. I perfectly understand all terms and phrases I have come across in the English version of Destiny (which I am playing because I prefer the voice acting over the German one). The German translations quite frequently are bad or plain wrong.
This is e.g. true for perks, weapon names and vendor descriptions.
One example. There was/is a perk reducing flinch when you're under fire. The German translation amounted to "reduces flinch when you are shooting", which is completely wrong, pretty much the opposite of what the perk does and the original (English) description says and so grossly misleading that it makes people either apply it for the wrong reason or not at all.
I am asking myself who is doing these amateurish German translations for Bungie. They are awful and the people doing them do not seem know the proper (sometimes technical or military) terms, and obviously cannot be bothered looking them up, e.g. with Deepl, which usually does a very good English - German translation job.

A common problem with large US media and entertainment, they don't always care about investing in native translations and would rather have a computer do it poorly, likely via Google-Translate. Bis Später, Guardian.

Edited by MNN8TV: 5/4/2024 12:21:41 AMEnglish can be tricky to translate because there are a bunch of words that don’t exist in other languages. For example there are at least 10 different ways to say large. While other languages may only have a couple.

Its not just german. All languages are translated poorly aside from English. And yes, as a Dutch citizen I know all about german dub culture. And frankly I think it’s hilarious. If its so important to you, then perhaps play with Germans only, and only speak German ingame. And make a German D2 wiki. I play with an Italian gamer often who has the game set in Italian and has the exact same issues. He is learning English but has to translate everything I type regarding guns and perks. Why not kill 2 flies in one hit, set the game to English and learn some english and not be confused the whole -blam!- time about perks and descriptions right? But why do what everyone else does when you can be stubborn and elite and want everything in your own language, a language by the way is completely different from English grammar wise, so yes there are differences in translation Hell, there are differences in translations between languages EVERYWHERE. Brazil players have the same issue, hell I would if I set my game to Dutch. But everything surrounding Destiny is in english. A universal, easy language that anyone could learn flawlessly in just 1-2 years by setting their tv shows, movies , games , pc and phones to ENGLISH Its not hard really, and I dont know how you guys can stomach dubs of movies, where the actors mouths make english word formations and you hear some german voice actor speak over it. -blam!- hi-la-ri-ous.

A lot of translation jobs in the industry are done by people who either barely understand or, in many cases, don't speak the language at all. Through the use of auto-translate tools. It's a cost cutting measure.

How to save money on localization: Use Google translate. Ist klug! -Bungie

Edited by Seki: 5/1/2024 9:20:32 PMI would really like to know who they consulted for the translation set Master - Großmeister Grandmaster - Spitzenreiter (It wasn't Google - it is capable of doing such a simple translation correctly)

Unfortunately, this also happens in movies a lot, which is, why I prefer to watch them in English. Translations to a foreign language are carried out by outsourcing - incl. the quality of the particular studio. The lower the price for the translation, the less time the studio has. My Steam is set to English.

Yeah. Some things are completely wrong, other just funny. Like the slideways "translation" lol

Edited by jhermannITJ: 5/2/2024 1:15:02 PM"Backe watsch" - this is the tag you chose right? Tell people what this means. "One example. There was/is a perk reducing flinch when you're under fire. The German translation amounted to "reduces flinch when you are shooting", which is completely wrong, pretty much the opposite of what the perk does and the original (English) description says and so grossly misleading that it makes people either apply it for the wrong reason or not at all". So, what's the example? What perk? What's the Deutsch description? Deutsch translations are lacking everywhere... but to call it "awful". I'd like to see an example in Deutsch, and I'll try to find it. We can go through it word by word and let's actually see if there could be a better description. Regardless, the game must be in a pretty great spot... if these are the complaints. Is it awful? Is it really? 😇 👍💠

This is the exact reason why I have trust issues when playing games on my language some are just weirdly and Hilariously translated when compared to English
