It takes priority over your melee charge when it is near you. Best to not throw it out when you are about to do a grapple melee.

But my dumb ape brain likes to push all the buttons at once Seriously tho, the amount of times I've caught my Spike instead of plowing into a group of enemies is truly countless

I could've sworn a previous patch made it so a Grapple melee was prioritized over a Spike catch, but I might be misremembering Grapple has been changed and unchanged too many times for me to keep up with lol
