So I decided to try out crucible today, get some challenges done, see what all the hype is about
99% hand cannons, surprise shotgun use, sudden heavy ammo spawn at a random location and a sword in my spine, and a snowball effect that transcends even my worst imaginings. Never in all my life have a felt such emotion towards a new game mode
I hate it, I 100% hate it, I will never touch it again even if an entire week of challenges is dedicated to it. Abilities don't really matter when everyone runs around with old weapons that do the same work they did in normal crucible modes. All this new mode did is change how many punches it takes to kill someone, and slightly less grenades. All the while high damaging guns reign supreme as you cant beat them with a faster gun as the damage of primary weapons has been reduced.
Every match all i heard was hand cannons, le-monarques, and thorns. No matter what i switched to, what range i fought them, it didnt matter. I tried jade rabbit, outbreak, mida, hell even quick silver, taking opponents at long ranges and they would still beat me because their guns deal higher impact so the nerf to their damage makes them better than mine. Hell, i think pulses are dead in checkmate because each bullet deals even less damage now so single shot weapons are better.
Thats all, i needed to vent my opinion and be done with it forever.

Ability and Special ammo changes? Amazing. Slower TTK and health changes? Not so great.

If that's your response to checkmate after playing it once then its likely that a lot of what pvp could get that others may like would make you respond the same way. That's not necessarily a good or a bad thing but it is a thing that can lead to unintended consequences. Plenty of people like it and with the right tuning in the hands of whatever devs they have now that have followed the lineal evolution of pvp enough to know what to do and will hopefully be listened to it just might end up being one of the best PvP things about this game. It needs to have weapons and particularly primaries truly be the focus though. And hopefully in that mode the game has moved past both hand cannons as being the paragon of skill and "anything goes" with the abilities and ohk specials. The mode does need further tuning but it very much does appear to be headed in a direction that the hardcore player base would like here lately. Checkmate countdown is definitely the superior version of countdown rush and with trials being elimination it simply needs some thought put into what's fair and balanced to have in an elimination mode vs. something like 6s or something like that and checkmate for that mode could also be a real alternative.
