All vanguard op strikes/battlegrounds are f2p through the Vanguard Ops playlist, but to play the Nightfall variant you need the parent DLC. So yes you need Witch Queen for a Season of the Risen battlegrounds.

The Vanguard Ops bit is a bug, I've seen a report on that one, and it has been escalated to Bungie.
But it is correct that you can't launch the Nightfall without Witch Queen.

I used to play all battle grounds without dlc last season . For example heist battleground europa nightfall was available while light blade ( normal strike ) required DLC. It has been like this since battlegrounds became a part nightfall rotation.

Here in the Lightfall era, access needs to be purchased through the Witch Queen expansion but access is not taken away from people who did play them originally through a season pass. Did you own that pass?

I may be mistaken on the Batteground access, but I suspect the whole issue is linked to the bug affecting Vanguard Ops. Bungie is aware so hopefully when they fix that, it will sort the any kind of access issue too.

No . I also played psi op battle ground moon nightfall without the season pass or dlc . Battle ground night falls Didn't require any dlc till this season .
