Power creep and the reimplementation of sunnsetting (From an anti sunsetting POV)

Before I start, I just want to point out that I do NOT support the idea of sunsetting. I hated it when it was first implemented and immediately lost personal connections that I had with some of my favorite weapons as a result. I was ecstatic when Joe Blackburn announced in the pre Witch Queen state of the game that sunsetting was going to be removed only a short while after it began because of community backlash and after weapon outliers (mountaintop and recluse) were nailed into their respective coffins. However, as of right now, we have a serious power creep problem on our hands because of 2 reasons: 1. Weapon crafting and enhanced perks. 2. Subclass 3.0 interactions and verbs/ability spam I’m only going to address the weapon crafting issue in this post as that is what I have put the most thought into. I may follow up with my thoughts on subclass power creep at a later date but that’s TBD. Mostly dependent on how much traction this post gains. I (and many other destiny community members as well as content creators) believe that weapon crafting is slowly killing the excitement in Destiny 2. Red border drops are the ONLY things that matter in terms of weapon drops from raids and seasonal activities. After enough red borders of a particular gun are obtained and it’s pattern retrieved, that gun can be FULLY crafted to the players idea of a god roll at the enclave. After this, ALL future drops of that weapon are completely and utterly useless. Even more so now with the imminent removal of legendary shards. Not only can the weapon be crafted, but it can be crafted with enhanced perks. I understand that most enhanced perks aren’t that great, but even still, they’re better than their default versions. Because of this, all excitement for future seasonal and raid weapon drops of the same weapon has been killed. There is no longer any reason to run raids every week besides the exotic drop(which only comes from the boss anyway with the exception of Necrochasm so there is still no real reason to run full raids besides spoils of conquest and fun/immersion. To this, I propose a fix (potential long term until we need to deal with this issue again in the future. And we will.) ONLY CRAFTED WEAPONS will have a sunset timer of 6-12 months. Depending on what Bungie would decide if they were to ever consider this. You craft the weapon and the date you crafted is already tracked and posted in game on your gun. When time is up, that weapon can no longer be infused or brought up to power in current endgame activities. Of course, this idea hinges on what Bungie officially decides to do with power level in the future. This fixes every problem listed above and then some: 1. It would still allow weapon crafting to have a place in D2 2. It would immediately return value to all random rolled raid and seasonal weapon drops, as these weapons (although craftable) will never be sunset. 3. It caters to the hardcore grinder and the casual destiny player. Hardcore players will still grind for a god rolled random weapon that will never have an expiration date. They can still craft the weapon too, but will know that they have a random rolled version to fall back onto when the crafted version is no longer usable. Casual players who can’t find time or simply don’t care about farming god rolls can craft the perfect roll to use for a while and then move onto the next weapon of choice after sunsetting occurs. Crafted weapons are much more easily accessible than farming raids over and over for perfect rolls. 3. Excitement for random weapon drops will return 4. Much more reason to re run raids and activities that drop these weapons. Adding both replay value to the raid as well as value to every weapon drop. I know this isn’t the BEST idea, but without bringing back sunsetting entirely, (nobody wants that) something like this will have to be good enough for the foreseeable future Let me know what you guys think and if you agree, let’s see if we can hit the off chance that Bungie sees this and gets some ideas, if they don’t have some already.

  • Why are we talking about power creep again? It doesn't even exist. Revolving nerfs and buffs do the exact same job as sunsetting without actually ruining everyone's vault of weapons permanently.

      Crafting is the greatest thing to happen to this game. Disagree. They don't update the core of the game cycle. And perk weighting is a huge problem. Dozens of hours in an activity not to get the roll I'm looking for is not a fun thing to do anymore. 100 attempts on a weapon to get skunked is crazy.

      • I disagree I feel crafting has increased my enjoyment of the games, it enables me to focus on actually playing the game instead of chasing a weapon roll (stats and perks) that I like with RNG that punishes me for pursuing the weapon. Ex: everyone knows red border drop rates are ridiculously low for neomuna weapons. I have always liked HC’s so it was natural for me to pursue Round Robin. Because the red border drop rate was so low I settled for seeing if I could get the roll I wanted organically. I never did I grinded all of defiance and most of Deep and never got the stat, masterwork, and perk roll I wanted on that weapon; I was lucky if I got a Round Robin every 2 weeks. Eventually I ended up using deepsight harmonizers to obtain the pattern from all the Round Robins I had saved up. And finally got the roll I wanted because I had to make it myself. That experience was awful it made me despise playing this game because the sheer degree of effort and torment I put myself through to obtain one single weapon. Yeah it felt good to finally have what I had tortured myself to get, but that feeling wasn’t enjoyment, bliss or satisfaction it was relief that the ordeal was over. In summary, if the pattern was easier to obtain I would have had the weapon and enjoyed the game a whole lot more during that time; instead of enduring the game. If you find that crafting is making the game more unenjoyable for you to play, then re approach how you play the game. Because I really don’t think I would enjoy playing the game with the changes that you’re arguing for; crafting is an opportunity to play how you want but not a mandate.

        Classic content creators fanbois, they want something and once we have it “oh it is too easy, oh is less fun” all i see in this post blah blah blah classic complain. Content creator “ oh destiny should have crafting, other games have crafting, etc” -bungie listens and now “oh game is less fun, blah blah” You are making it seem like we have the ability to craft every gun in the game and materials are not limited, go play another game Remember in d2 year 1? Bungie listened to all the feedback about power fantasy and sweats in PvP and we got a 2 primary mode since everyone is was upset of dying to shotguns and the game became super slow and boring. You are complaining about crafting and you only play one character??? 😂😂😂, maybe go focus on the other characters and try to get everything on every character then see if you feel like there is nothing to craft and complain.

        • Dumbest idea ever. Weapon crafting made the game 100x better. Anyone who disagrees plays either 24/7 or always gets godrolls. I have played both D1 and D2 since the beta and NEVER got a roll i wanted. Crafting is the best thing added for people who dont play 24/7 . Its funny that most people who complain about it are content creators who play 24/7 . They just want to brag about weapons they get in youtube videos instead of everyone being able to get those same rolls via crafting.

          • What’s the need to introduce sunsetting again? The game isn’t struggling. Most players don’t have what a small percentage of players have after years of playing. So introducing a wildly unpopular thing like sunsetting would be only to appease a small percentage of players that are bored. They simply can’t put out enough weapons regularly to implement something like sunsetting. The last thing the gene needs is major changes to create even more issues.

              • Idk about sunsetting Crafted weapons. What they could do is make fewer weapons craftable, or maybe lock them behind master difficulty? I'm no expert, but I hate sunsetting as I hate hell and all Montagues. There has to be a better fix

              • That wouldn't solve anything. People would just grind for god rolls instead of crafting & then you'd be back to square one.

              • No point in grinding and logging in every week to do activities once they added weapon crafting. All my friends would spend so long grinding and comparing rolls to encourage each other to grind more, trying to get that 5/5 god-roll. Now you can log in and get a guaranteed red-border on most high end activities and craft a god-roll, it’s taken the RNG out of the equation. Feedback to bungie, keep weapon crafting. But only allow basic perks (e.g. adrenaline junkie, rampage, vorpal) to be crafted, leaving unique or top tier perks as random roll loot in activities that can’t be crafted.

See how easy that is, problem solved. Same could be said for content being too easy. They do not have to use meta load outs, and weapons. But they do, and then complain content that a vast majority of the players can not complete is too easy. For example, I refused to run well this season in GM’s. I used nova warp warlock in a majority of them. It was fun and challenging at times.

                  • People who have a problem with crafting need to learn to engage differently so they don't create problems for themselves. You can absolutely not craft anything, play with only random rolls, and barely be at any disadvantage. Honestly, most of the poeple I see with a problem with crafting either play the game for a living, or play the game so much, you'd think it was their job, and yeah I bet crafting bites a bit if you're one of those people. Enhanced perks, adept mods, and the stat bump from MWing an adept aren't SO strong that you absolutely need it in order to complete content or compete in crucible. And no, we should definitely NOT just sunset crafted weapons. There's zero (good/valid) reason lil timmy who randomly got a god roll should be able to keep that but my crafted one gets deprecated just because people don't like crafting. It doesn't actually address the power creep problem, it's just a roundabout way to nerf crafting because some people don't like it, and those people would rather whine until crafting is hurt in some way than change the way they engage to better suit their wants/needs.

                      I don’t want sunsetting either but at the same time it’s like why chase the reissued Swarm of the Raven or the new festival heavy GL when Regnant exists? Why chase Point of the Stag when it has nothing making it worth chasing over any other arc bow you’d already have? Why chase dungeon weapons when something more reasonably attainable will replace before I get the roll I want from the disrespectfully godawful RNG of dungeon weapon drops? Why chase world weapons when there is no direct source to chase them and something more reasonably attainable will replace it anyway before I get the roll I want because of more godawful RNG? Why chase adepts in NFs with mid perk pools when something comparable or better already exists? Why chase even the regular version when platinum master completions don’t guarantee a regular drop despite that platinum GMs guarantee an adept drop? The game has come to consist of a terrible and potent combination of things that disrespect my time and effort, on top of most newer weapons not feeling worth the chase because of Bungie’s fear of potential power creep. Which is a thing, but they have chosen to submit to that fear and don’t release things they know players would love because of “overdelivery” and power creep. You know what combats power creep and newer weapons eventually feeling too samey and not worth chasing? New things. New damage types, synergy weapon perks, new archetypes/frames that alter engagement, etc. They’ve so far combatted the need for sunsetting with Stasis and Strand damage types, with the Light subs upgrade, with the introduction of glaives and now a new hand canon archetype, but it’s running thin now. They need to keep this up and stop being afraid afraid of power creep and give players weapons with perks/combos they knew we want.

                    • Forget that. Is there a better way to get all the strand aspects without collecting enough strand meditation for your secondary and tertiary characters? I think that should be the focus.

                    • It does actually make some sense. Unless the weapon is unable to be crafted, there is no chase once you have unlocked the pattern. You can craft a PvP and PvE god roll for yourself. We lose our artifact perks every season. Why not have the crafted weapons only good for a couple of seasons? I’m one of the few people that wasn’t really bothered by sunsetting. I did miss a few of my old favorites (blast furnace…) but it forced me to get comfortable with new guns. It actually made the following few seasons feel like it was worth playing again instead of just crunching to the same guns for every activity.

                      Simple solution instead. Crafted weapons no longer can have enhanced perks, randomly dropped weapons can be enhanced to get enhanced perks. That puts more value on randomly dropped weapons while allowing players to skip RNG if they just want the god roll minus enhanced perks with crafting. If its necessary for sunsetting to return give every legendary weapon a 3-4 year life span, after that their power is capped. 3-4 year life span would be long enough for you to get good use out of a weapon and enough time to get a perfect roll. Only other thing is if you add sunsetting then loot needs to be more forgiving on RNG.

                    • Powercreep is a myth! Weakness creep is real. Forsaken was the most empowered D2 gaurdians have ever been but at no time exceeded the d1 sandbox. Example. D1 grenades were lethal, had more explosive range and were on 25s cooldown. 3-5 fast moving supers per match. Lots of special ammo and heavy. There are no lethal grenades now. Cooldowns have more than doubled. One maybe two supers a match. Every weapon does less body shot and precision damage [i]whilst simultaneously having more recoil[/i]. Literally the things that make this game [i]unique[/i] have been made sparse. [b][i][u]the gameplay is increasingly boring[/u][/i][/b] I'm an og from d1 beta and I can barely stand to play this increasingly slow garbage. Powercreep? No. Quantitatively not.

                      • No, just no. Some people never get to enjoy crafted weapons at all due to rng and time constraints as it is. And some people do not like chasing a random good roll due to rng. The current system allows both types of players to pursue a weapon in what ever way tickles their fancy. Taking away crafted weapons, especially in raids, will just make people that raid constantly feel unrewarded. Just imagine how many times you would have to run a raid to get the weapon you want to drop first, then have the rolls you want on it. Same for seasonal content. People already can not stand the random nature of getting the raid and dungeon exotics to drop, never mind adding legendary weapons to that mix.

                          How are you gonna make a post, then argue and start going at it with other players? lol. That alone right there just makes your post cringe and unprofessional. So because ppl disagree and have their opinions and don't like the idea you're suggesting, give you the right to bump heads with them and then wonder why they are being hostile as well? Players already voiced their opinion. Your idea just sucks, and no one wants that. If you want to keep dealing with RnG, then don't craft anything and just play however you see fit. I'm not here to argue with you nor to go back and forth. Simply put, your idea sucks. There's no explanation needed. It's just bad P.S. idk about anyone else, but I love raids, I don't care if I have nothing else to gain from it. It's the only activity I always keep running even if I got the exotic and full gear and weapons
