Essentially the auto melee function (which has honestly been broken for most of its life span) doesn't respect the Strand grapple melee overwrite. Essentially if you have a normal charged melee ability while grappling you are unable to do the grapple punch, instead your grapple will end and the charged melee with fire out instead, leading you to loosing your grapple, your directional control and your punch, and either landing you directly in the middle of a group of enemies with your pants down, or just straight off a cliff because your brilliant Spiderman swing into sick punch back to land turned into you yeeting a needle 30 miles off into the ocean and you falling like a brick off a cliff.
This is in spite of the fact that the grapple clearly overwrites your melee ability in the U.I (much like swords, supers, and some relics do) but it still reverts to using your standard charged melee anyway. So it's literally impossible to grapple punch unless you intentionally waste all of your melee charges first. There is no way to get around with this binding options on controller without sacrificing the ability to charge melee dudes up close. Also rebinding the 3 melee options in a way that seems like it should work instead just makes it so that you can't normal melee anymore. Neat! Seriously, just try to find a way to make it work so that you can charge melee up close (and important thing for most builds) but still strand grapple melee without having to waste your charged melee first, you just can't.
Ideally they would fix how auto melee works in general, but at the very least there just needs to be a overwrite that ensures the game uses the actual charge grapple melee attack actually displayed in the U.I instead of the non-displayed needle attack that you would literally never want to use in that position unless you want to suddenly swing off a cliff with no control because instead of swinging over and punching some dudes you instead throw a needle into the next neighborhood and fall off a cliff with no directional control.
Just a thought.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

+1 this. It makes the Hunter Strand kit pretty clunky, and surprised it hasn't been fixed already
