The lack of transparency in competitive point gain/loss is frustrating to engage with. In other games with competitive systems there is a clearly laid out method to gain and lose points. Many competitive games in Destiny end with a seemingly random amount of points gained or lost. It's hard to know if games where a +5 was gained is a bug or not without systems like this.
