Hear me out. All Light Level based progression does anymore is lock enjoyable content again for veteran players who were just enjoying them and blocks new players from playing new content entirely. I know several veteran players who express this as the reason to their burn out and feels like a punishment rather than a challenge and keeps basically any of my friends who are new players from even starting to play for how much grinding they have to do before enjoying the game with friends.
We only really need difficulty selection as we do now, just without the grinding barrier of light level. I guarantee D2 would see a massive increase in playerbase and dedicated players if this was done. I've been playing Destiny since the beta and it just doesn't make sense to keep light level progression anymore. The only kind of grinding that ever feels good and rewarding is for gear stats and guns anyway, so what's the point? It only hurts the game and blocks players from enjoying new content.

I already pretty much ignore light level once I hit the soft cap each season. After that it's just not worth it to focus on pinnacles only to get dupes on dupes week over week for little to no benefit.
-
A very simple solution on their end is something they have already done, which was the legend witch queen campaign. It capped your light level even if you were underneath it so that it was a fluent and equal challenge across the board. Why have they not performed the same fundamental idea with something like grandmasters? You are quite literally locked out of that content because of an arbitrary number.
-
Agree on one part, disagree on some others. I do believe that locking players to a minimum light level is dumb and shouldn't be a thing, specially in something like gm's which in any case has a set light level deficit regardless of the player level. However, I also belive that light level is a great equalizer when it comes to master difficulty raids and dungeons, since lower skilled players can slightly overlevel those difficulty levels to have an easier time and be able to access the reward. I don't think slapping a light level deficit on everything is the way to go, but people should have the option of doing so if they so choose.

Edited by StealthJediPro: 1/4/2023 3:27:08 AMI am so angry I have not touched the game in months! I logged and low and behold more people like me. At least let me pay $20 to bypass thousands of hours of mind numbing B.S. over and over and over and over and over and over..... then again! I'm not buying the expansion I'm not doing the grind util the fix it or not don't care anymore. WERE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMOOOOOOORE!!!!!

Light level is content. If it didn't exist, people wouldn't be on the hamster wheel day after day.
-
Yea, sick of dying in endgame cuz I didn’t farm pinnacles for two months.
-
It's just a pointless and outdated system

Leveling is a part of RPGS. The problem is that this game’s progression system is a broken travesty. In well-designed games, you can level up playing any part of the game. Progression is just a function of time invested. End-game rewards are the top tier of loot in terms of power, not chasing a number or chasing currency. The Milestone and Pinnacle system are a broken holdover from D2 Y1 when the game launched with a broken loot system (fixed weapon rolls and cosmetic armor). So ther was no reason to play any activity once you had one of every kind of weapon or armor piece. So Bungie faced the problem of how to you get people to grind a loot game with no loot? You play hide and seek with progression. So they broke the relationship between player time investment and rate of progression. You all limit which activities and end-game relevant as far as progression. Result? You confine the player to an ever-shrinking circle of activities that can progress his character or gear. The RNG nature of the system turn that circle of activity into a slot machine where you gamble your time in hope that the game spits out something useful. If it doesn’t? The game has effectively stolen your time. Add to that a Champion system that severely restricts what weapons you can use and a Seasonal system that pushes people towards specific builds? You have rigid metas that quickly go stale, and a highly repetitive/poorly-rewarding play loop that people are growing tired of. Especially if they play the most “difficult” content. Progression simply needs to be overhauled instead of an endless series of bandages slapped on it.

Every year - same message. Not heard though. Power level is pointless. Its grind is an arbitrary mechanic to increase players' time. Serving no other purpose. Difficulty can be introduced by other means. They have shown that several times by activities such as contest modes, WQ legendary campaign (exemplary and well done) or this season's Battlegrounds. I am running the grind but I don't like it. Rather should say detest it. Being forced to run activities for (pinnacle) engrams I would run less or not at all had I not to increase PL feels bad. Worst thing is the reset every season. Bungie showing us their middle finger. PL increase/grind is a Sisyphean task writ large.
-
Agreed, we need mods and more abilities and perks. Light/power is an outdated system that doesn't work and only there to lock you out of content.
-
Yes. Leveling in this game is a slog and unfun imo.
-
I agree or if they are so stubborn just have the LL increase when a new expansion drops and call it a day, this every season thing is just like why. Or ya know remove champions. This game runs on so much arbritrary difficulty its crazy
-
I actually agree. I'm always thinking to myself, "So what, in two years is going to go up to 2000?
-
We don't need light level, Bungie does. All we're chasing is an arbitrary number that screams "look at me". Apart from that, what does light level do other than lock us out of end game content?
-
Played an MMO where they took away leveling. It ruined the game. All older content was unplayed except by new characters. It began the chase purely for items and the newest content has the best items. It also removes any sense of progression.
-
I think world tiers could help quite a bit. Think of it as setting the whole game to master or legendary difficulty. I doubt that Destiny could even support something like that though with the way it was built. Light levels feel bad and have for a while but I feel like the game would be worse with no long term progression. Pinnacles can't even get me into Crucible/Gambit anymore and let's not pretend the loot pool it gonna quadruple as soon as light levels go. Plus lets be real and not for get the monkeys paw. If they remove leveling, they are not going to remove the grind (hours spent). They will double down on artifact EXP or something else to make up for it.
-
how would you make it perfect?
-
The thing is we do need light level until they can actually produce enough loot for us to chase, which I doubt they can or will. The pinnacle grind is there so there is actually something to do in this game. Without it, we wouldn't have much to do in a given season. Keep in mind I hate this system, but it's the truth. The only way they can get rid of the pinnacle grind, is if they actually fill these activities with real loot instead of a pinnacle. We should be grinding strikes for strike specific loot, Gambit should get a full refresh of brand new loot to chase so we play Gambit for loot, Nightfalls should have armor ornaments to chase along with NF weapons. Think about all the activities you run JUST for a pinnacle. If they got rid of the level grind, you wouldn't play them at all. ALL of those activities need real loot to chase to give us an actual reason to play them. Without loot and no level grind, these seasons would have barely anything to do. Bungie uses the pinnacle grind as content so it seems like there's more to do than there is. They wouldn't be able to add activities like Preservation, Legendary Battlegrounds, Master Ketchcrash, without any actual proper loot incentive. You'd run Preservation once and never again if there was no pinnacle attached. Who would run any master level content without any proper loot incentive? But that is what the game SHOULD be. We should 100% be running content for loot, not a pinnacle engram to infuse into our gear. That doesn't feel rewarding. Most of the time, it's a waste of time. Bungie needs to finally understand that this is a loot based game, and they need to fill these activities with loot instead of having us grind up a light level every season just to play the same activities we have been playing for years.
-
Agreed. Light level is already largely pointless in a large portion of the game while also being capped in other activities to provide a cheap sense of challenge. And that lazy form of challenge is exactly why it’s lasted this long.
-
Bump! Bump! Bump it up! I hate the light/power level grind. I never have achieved the max and I most never will. Grinding for gear is what keeps me entertained. Not this useless gatekeeping light level garbage.
-
I guarantee D2 would see a massive increase in playerbase and dedicated players if this was done.
I guarantee it would have the opposite effect.
-
Disagree completely. Leveling up is a core concept of this game. It gives you something to chase. And that’s only if you’re doing end game activities. If you have no desire to do a GM or Raid then you have no need for 1590 items. And getting to the soft cap takes literally a couple days.
-
Its an artificial way to create a lazy motivation to keep playing and doing old content. That way new/returning players can do old content with the vetarans.
-
100% agree with this, it would make way more fun, just to jump in and go collect this, run that instead of constantly running "preservation" for a pinnacle drop among other things. it would also allow players to play other games without feeling penalized for not playing every week. this needs to happen
-
You’re right especially with this season where light level really doesn’t matter.
-
The only thing that will make people burn out more than pinnacle grind is REMOVING the pinnacle grind. Because then why even play the game? Half the fun of games is levelling up, that's why once you get every camo in cod, the game gets boring because there's nothing to do anymore
