I was a huge fan of Destiny and Destiny 2 back in the day. Due to life circumstances and my friend group migrating to other games I haven't played in a long time. For anyone reading this, I am not abreast of the latest news or anything - I dont know the drama, I'm not on any teams.
I've been playing a lot of Blizzard games since leaving D2 - Overwatch 1 and Diablo 3 have been great. However, I am disillusioned with their battle pass model moving forward and, seeing as I need a new shooter to scratch that itch, I decided to download my old favorite again.
Now, I knew D2 had similar transactional issues in that the game has always had a certain exploitative approach to releasing new content. I knew that going in. Heck, I was prepared to buy a few newer expansions to catch up on the story. My main goal was to just play through the original story and catch up - I'm a casual, I'm happy playing soccer or just shooting infinite waves of enemies in the EDZ. I'm easy to please and willing to buy things out of gratitude for games that I feel respect me and my time.
So imagine my absolute rage when I discovered that not only has the predatory model for new contet continued, but that the original (extremely well done) intro campaign AND the DLCs which I had already purchased have been REMOVED FROM THE GAME. Bungie - I'm going to say it once, and I'm going to say it bluntly. F*** You. I know you've always had your issues but I thought you were better than that.
Maybe I am just naive, or too hopeful, or whatever. I remember when studios like yours were filled with people who loved gaming, who loved their creations. Maybe I am wrong but aren't you the studio who fought to split with Activision BECAUSE of their focus on profit? BECAUSE they were not doing justice to your vision for this incredible, beautiful game world? I keep sitting here, hurt and even more disillusioned, and all I can keep thinking is why? Was it worth it, to sell your integrity, your brain child? What would the kid in you think? You know the one - eight years old, just learning to love Zelda or maybe Spyro or Final Fantasy? The one who looked at a new world with wonder, not dollar signs? Would they be disappointed in who you've become? You know the answer to that.
How could you have fallen into the same trap as so many other studios? You have become the enemy of your own creation: Bungie - the Destroyer of Worlds, Eater of History, King of the Ashes.
Community - I don't care. If experience has taught me anything it is that those of you who are still around in a game like this typical use this type of economic model as a way of asserting your profound superiority over others. You don't care about the casual, it's about prestige you can gain - you play this game like a vulture, using your wallet to achieve recognition where your skill could not. You pride yourself in purchasing every microtransaction and season pass for mediocre new content. You are part of the problem, and you revel in that fact.
If you are not one of these... cravens of the gaming world, if you genuinely have stuck around because this is your game and you have weathered, and continue to weather, the abuse because you hold out hope that things will get better, that is not directed at you. You are simply victims of abuse. It's not going to get better, developers need a soul to feel pain, or empathy, or regret. They don't have one. Maybe Activision ate it? I'm more than happy to blame them at least, but it doesn't change the fact that you are hoping for a lost cause.

Fantastic observations, well written and well thought out comments. For many in the community watching the fall of this amazing game world has been heartbreaking. Very akin to an abusive relationship.

No DMG_04

So if I enjoy this game for what it is I'm a victim of abuse? That's a serious leap in logic.
-
All they have to do is make the removed content optional installs like COD does with it's campaign/zombies Those with the excess storage space can have it installed and those who don't want the game taking 150-200GB can simply choose to not have it installed Performance wise it really shouldn't change anything for current gen consoles and even Xbox One X / PS4 Pro shouldn't run into much issues having it installed in the performance department either
You have become the enemy of your own creation: Bungie - the Destroyer of Worlds, Eater of History, King of the Ashes.
Damn. You should be a writer. Now I just want a cutscene of Calus saying something like this to the Traveler shortly before the final boss. It would draw a perfect parallel to Ghaul’s last speech in his mortal form.

Edited by Blackjack: 10/3/2022 7:54:07 PMMan, I wish we could blame Activision. Unfortunately, we found out the hard way that Activision wasn't responsible for the bad choices. No. They were holding Bungie *back* from them. Bungie eventually left them so they could have 'true' creative freedom. Freedom they then used to make some of the worst business decisions I have ever seen in any company ever. I don't want D2 to die, but it's just a matter of time at this point with their predatory business designs, constant pretense at "Oh, we care!" while only fixing issues that benefit players, and so on. As an example, Duality is a dungeon that has been actually entirely unplayable since it launched. Constant glitches, including ones that randomly team-wipe you and force you to restart entire encounters at a time or, worse, glitch the encounter so you have to go back to orbit and reload it to even try again. It has been this way for months and months now. They've only fixed anything in it *once*. That one time? It was because we'd found a way to cheese the end boss, which they then patched in *days*. Which, after 'fixing' an exploit that hurt no one and only let players who knew how to do it get a free win in a way that affected only them, somehow broke the dungeon worse. Like you said, it's an abusive relationship. I'm here because I've been here since Red War. I do the bare minimum to keep up with the story at this point, and sate myself entirely by watching lore videos about it on YouTube in hopes that maybe one day it'll get better. Perhaps Sony will fix Bungle's stupidity in hopes of not watching their investment burn itself asunder. But we'll see. At this point, my optimism has run out. Sorry you had to find out about the game's state this way. It was soul crushing enough watching it happen. I can only imagine how much it must have sucked to reinstall it and find it like this. EDIT: For any of you elitists who start complaining about people being casuals when they point stuff like this out, I don't plan on engaging you in the slightest. I'll just echo what OP said, as I couldn't have said it better myself:
Community - I don't care. Been here since vanilla d1. This game has always been a tug of war between the artists that created it and the executives trying to sell it. It's tough out there for a guardian just tryna keep his -blam!- hard in a cruel and harsh world.
-
I still to this day go back and watch the original d1 reveal game play and go what the -blam!- happened how did we get here?
-
Another person who fails to know what they spend money on until after it's spent. At what point do you idiots think, perhaps I should research what I want BEFORE buying?
-
Or....maybe I enjoying playing the game.
-
Love letters to Bungie
-
Not to disregard the point you’re making, but why all the melodrama?
-
So uninstall the game and leave the forums. Do something else.
-
Bungie is now a dumpster fire. They stopped giving a -blam!- a long time ago. They demand money for all content, yet claim to be F2P. I don't recall having to purchase the game originally, and then having to purchase the DLC, then purchase a special key to unlock a dungeon, in any other f2p game. Bungie has destroyed any and all good will the public has had in them. When D2 is finally over, bungie is going in the grave because their legacy is going to speak for itself.
-
Hey, no criticism here. The fanboys don’t like it. Anyhow, everything you said is true.

Being all in the middle of the drama kinda sucks. Edit:
I'm a casual, I'm happy playing soccer
Would the guardian who docked their ship on our soccer field kindly move it? If not, I'm going to ask Amanda to push it off the side of the tower. That is all. Thank You.
How could you have fallen into the same trap as so many other studios? You have become the enemy of your own creation: Bungie - the Destroyer of Worlds, Eater of History, King of the Ashes.
I wish people would wake up. You said it yourself how they had people that cared, yet Bungie made sure to get rid of them. You might want to question that before thinking this was something that just happened when in fact it was planned.

You want seasonal stuff to be in the same level as full games that takes years in development Maybe the issue is not the games with the model that are actually successful but with how little the consumer understands how game development works Destiny 2 is by far one of the biggest win with that model Can this model goes bad? Yea we seen it with the avenger game and halo infinite that were more focused on making the player pay than actual giving content Still better than what CoD been doing with a 2/3 team rotation Better than anthem entire campaign or division or outriders The reason why these "season " aren't in the game anymore is because they were obsolete and cause a bad bloating and performance issue would occur more if these would still be on But hey forsaken was the last thing to ever got sunset ,going forward they won't need to do this anymore (probably because we are close to the end for D2)

Silver is on sale this month hooray!
