CHAINS! FOR CENTURIES WE HAVE BEEN BOUND BY THEM! WE HAVE BECOME PAWNS OF OUR OWN DEVICES... NO LONGER! - Eramis the Pointy
Such is the sum of why I—and many more—would love to be able to play Destiny 2 on Linux.
I use Ubuntu on my laptop, for a bevy of reasons, but Windows on my desktop for one (1) reason, and one (1) reason alone!:
Destiny 2.
Every other beloved game in my library that I actually play recently runs natively on Linux, or near flawlessly via Proton.
BattlEye has had native linux/mac support for a while, and their Proton support is on an opt-in basis. So... Why not opt in, Bungie? At the core, cheaters are injecting or editing the code of the game as its running by some means. Anticheat stuff is meant to track and eventually stop that, regardless of platform.
There's arguments to be made against it in regards to Linux's more accessible architecture and the ability to change your system's code... But they tend to fall flat when you already have systems in place (Anticheat) to mitigate them. There's also the argument that exploit tools are more accessible on Linux due to some distros repository distribution method... But that falls flat when there's already systems in place (Anticheat) to mitigate them, as well as the understanding that repository searches are fundamentally the same exact thing as googling a program and downloading it from their official page.
I've wanted to experiment with Linux on my desktop, but the disk space devotion to Destiny 2 alone is the only thing keeping me back. All of my drives are formatted as NTFS for compatibility's sake with Windows. I have—AT MINIMUM— 108.84 gigabytes of drive space tied up to run one game if I were to dual-boot. That's 20 gigabytes of drive space, as well, tied up for update buffer space and whatnot.
In short, I have to an entire 128gb SSD devoted to Destiny 2 because of a domino effect that keeps me—and at least 181 others if ProtonDB is to be my source—on Windows. 15 gigabytes of drive space has to be allocated to Windows, 105 gigs of space have to be allocated to Destiny, and pretty much the rest of the drive is going to fill up quickly with Windows bulk.

Edited by Stefan Rial: 2/10/2023 2:43:07 AMDon't forget that Bungie was owned by Microsoft until last year. They simply wanted you to stay with windows or get an XBox. Now, with Sony that might change, but something that has been for over 20 years, this change won't happen quickly.

Please Bungo, if I can remote play Destiny 2 on my iPad or iPhone with the PS5 app, what's the harm in giving us a lil' Linux compatibility as a treat? It's even got BattleEye! You guys DO like BattleEye, right? Right? (Seriously though, c'mon! Is it the penguin? Do you not like penguins? I mean I get if like, Tux is a Disciple and that's why but at least let us know!)
