Could we please get an update on the possibility of the game running on the Steam Deck?
With the new TWAB this week touching on the success of the anti cheat systems, I want to ask for an update on the possibility of steam deck players joining in the future.
I completely understand and hear the common sentiments towards Linux gaming, but some of those thoughts are far too disingenuous, or often untrue:
-"Devs would have new things to watch cheat wise."
This is generally untrue as most cheats are changing values running in system memory which is what is watched by services like Battle Eye and Easy Anti Cheat (Battle Eye also supports Linux gaming, it just needs to be turned on and opted into by the developer!)
-"Well okay fine, but most games don't even work on Linux."
An article from Tom's Hardware DECEMBER OF 2021 states that nearly 80% of Steams TOP 100 games run nearly flawlessly. These are the most recent numbers I can find AND that was BEFORE the Steam Deck first released, which was around February of 2022, so I imagine this number has only been growing with such a larger user base playing on these decks.
Epic has had a very clear anti Linux stance for a while now, much to Tim Sweeney hypocritical credit, but nearly all major MMORPG games work on the deck if that's what you fancy. WoW, FFXIV, SWtoR all work on the deck.
-"Linux is incredibly hard to play games on and required an experienced user to use and navigate when issues arise."
Honestly, on the deck, the biggest hurdle for me was just getting used to pulling up the on screen keyboard. And even that can just be changed to use a remote one if for some reason someone was not a fan of it.
I'll put it to you guys straight, and keep in mind, I'm heavily opinionated (clearly), but I was finding a snappier experience on the deck than I did with normal windows installations. Here's some improvements on the steam deck over windows that some of you may like:
-When in desktop mode, and you open folders to the system files, it doesn't NEED to open multiple windows like Windows does. It can open the different destinations in tabs, similarly to web browsers.
-The "Discover" store in desktop mode has thousands of free applications to download and install, and generally isn't filled with crap ware as anyone out there that is trying to scam will stick to where the larger market is. It also FUNCTIONS, unlike its alcoholic uncle, the Microsoft Store.
-Most everything can just be auto updated with one command. It's generally that easy.
-If none of the above have piqued your interest, you can download and play for free Space Cadet Pinball on the Discover store.
-"Controls for games on the deck are bound to suck, I'm going to have to spend so much time reconfiguring them just to play."
I figured this one out pretty quickly when I started playing on the deck; Steam has a controls menu on each game and you can show the most popular control configurations. Well, they are also sorted by what sort of input the configuration is for, and they show icons for that type as well. You can also sort them by most popular. I only ever have downloaded the popular steam deck ones for each game I've played and they have all worked flawlessly.
To try to get back on topic, since this isn't MEANT to be a deck shill post, though the above was meant to educate those unfamiliar, I want to throw out some speculation on why Bungie may have not enabled it for the deck yet.
As someone who has worked in the industry themselves, I am unfamiliar with vendor licensing for packaged software plugins like Battle Eye. I have wondered if, even if it's easy to do task wise, if it just costs too much for Bungie to warrant spending money on enabling it for the SteamOS. I understand that it works on Stadia and both are flavors of Debian, but sometimes licensing language can be tricky.
Another possibility could very well be that the support staff in the forums are not capable of adding Linux as a supported platform. I'm not really sure how to respond to that one if that's a contributing reason. Linux communities in the past have been pretty good about saying "Don't worry! We will support ourselves!" And scurrying away, but that's a gamble and the SteamOS is not locked down like Stadia is, and the Steam Deck is generally more user friendly, therefore more accessible, even for people that wouldn't normally care about linux.
So ultimately, speculation is pretty hard and doesn't do us much good, that is why I am asking, again, Bungie could we please have an update on the viability of Destiny 2 on the Steam Deck? Many of us would love to join and play.
