Krait, the Only Kinetic Slot Veist Weapon and it's a Stasis One (Review)
So who was it at Bungie that decided to create this gun? This gun existing brings me so much joy since I've always been a fan of Veist auto rifles. Valakadyn was one of the best Rapid-Fire Frame auto rifles that I've ever used and since back then when that was obtainable, I'd always wished I could get my hands on a kinetic RF Frame that was about as good. I never could get a good Chroma Rush that I wanted to drop, but now that Krait exists, I feel even more compelled to get a god roll of this one now.
Disclaimer: Tests with this weapon were done with a specific roll in both PvE and PvP, though accurate PvP results are a bit too difficult at the moment apparently due to some Crucible issues. Nearly every single match I've played in there has been a nightmare, especially against other console players. The matchmaking has been rough this week and Crossplay has been acting odd.
So Krait, like its other Veist auto counterparts, has great base stats with a good, somewhat-vertical recoil direction and it can be very consistent as long as you can train its reticle on your opponents well. If you've ever used the rare Veist auto rifle or Perseverance, you'll be familiar with its circle-shaped reticle. You'll also find that every single roll of this weapon will come with the new Veist Stinger origin trait, which grants a chance to auto-reload the magazine when you deal damage with it on a 5-second cooldown, meaning that this thing is going to shoot a lot of bullets.
This weapon is capable of rolling perks like Ricochet Rounds, so this is one of those guns where you can bump up its stability and range. But as far as its perks go, that's about the best you'll get for anything that helps stability, range or accuracy unless you're good with Stats for All or you consider Moving Target to be worth it, which I wouldn't use either for PvP based on performance in both PvP and PvE.
There are some nice trait combinations that you can get with this weapon like Stats for All and One for All, which could turn your weapon into a combatant-slaying machine when activated together. Overflow and Focused Fury could be a good combo, but I haven't tested it and don't know how Focused Fury would treat the combination since it requires landing 50% of your magazine as precision hits before it increases your damage for the rest of the mag or until reloaded or stowed.
In my case, I've been using Subsistence and Adagio on mine. The rest of my roll comes with Extended Barrel or Arrowhead Brake, Ricochet Rounds or Flared Magwell and a stability masterwork. And with Veist Stinger on this gun combined with the other main traits, as long as you are simply killing enemies, this gun will partially reload on kill, slow down the fire rate and increase damage + range, and it has another chance to just auto-reload completely just by using it. Basically, you can be chaining a ton of kills with just one mag of this gun for a good moment.
Now there are downsides to this weapon. Besides not having any traits like Dynamic Sway Reduction, Tap the Trigger or Rangefinder, the weapon can recoil away from your enemies a bit too much at times, even after dealing damage and procing the bullet-magnetism mechanic. You might try to use Counterbalance Stock to control the recoil, but depending on the barrel you are using, this might not help at all. In fact, it could make the recoil worse due to stat funkiness. Targeting Adjuster will also not be doing you many favors either. The best way I could get this gun to work was to maximize the recoil direction stat with Arrowhead Brake and Counterbalance Stock, so it would basically just recoil up. But that also means you will be missing out on range, which this type of auto rifle isn't good at to begin with. By the time you find someone in a good range to fight with this weapon, they'll be unloading on you with a medium-zoom SMG, Tarrabah or Shayura's Wrath and out-damaging you. This archetype is also rather weak on the damage side too. And due to the difficult recoil you're already managing on a weak auto rifle frame type, getting flinched does not help either. Crimson is this gun's worst nightmare, even at range and especially at that.
If you're going to use this gun in a sweaty Crucible environment (or just in Crucible in general right now due to how rough it is currently), even if it barely helps, you should run an Unflinching mod or two just so you can stand a chance with this gun. It's very good for PvE, but the type of weapon makes it fall behind many other weapons for PvP. Hand cannons and pulse rifles can definitely out-duel you. I can only love this thing for PvE.
Perhaps everything else just got too buffed and left this frame type behind. I miss the old Veist glory.
