Petra had prepared herself for the flashbacks, but not well enough.
The second she landed her jumpship on Hjura 1's sprawling lawns, it all came back and hit her like a wretch on a pike. The time when she was exhausted and stressed and Uldren had planned a week-long "scouting mission" and instead brought her here. Spending a week relaxing, eating outside in the tall, soft grass, laughing with him over a campfire, swimming with him in the lake's clear water. Watching the sun set and falling asleep under the stars, his arms wrapped tight around her, all her stress fading away. What an excellent liar he'd been. She had trusted him with everything only for him to tell her he'd never really loved her at all. Whatever sick game he'd been playing, he was a master at it. There'd been a few others between him and Crow, but none of them had ever loved her the way Uldren had pretended to. None of them had been as hard to lose. No one until he came back and then.... he was different. The man he'd pretended to be, the man Petra had loved.... that was who he really, genuinely was all the sudden. At that point she had been far down a dark path of not trusting anyone, and she had refused to let him anywhere near her even though he had obviously had a crush on her, and even rejected him so coldly that he had become equally cold and rude in return.
Petra remembered, months after he got his memories back and disappeared, how one day she had received a message from him. He hadn't spoken to anyone in months, but he had sent her a message, apologizing for all the things Uldren had done to her. Petra remebered responding, saying she didn't hold that debt against him. After that, for some reason, they had started talking more regularly, and then all the sudden when he asked her out again she didn't refuse. Then after that she hadn't been able to stop herself from falling in love with him again, and after facing many obstacles together, she had decided to leave the Reef to marry him. She had never wanted to leave the Reef, but Mara had banished her when she refused to end her relationship with Crow. He really did care about her, or he wouldn't have asked her to marry him, and if she let Mara tell her what to do, she'd be hurting him, just like all the others had hurt her.
She had never once regretted it, in the eleven years they had spent together, perfectly happy, raising their children and living like royalty off of scavenged goods. Those were plentiful these days. Now it was all gone, and no telling if he'd ever come back. If he didn't have such a short temper, if he'd just waited until the morning, they could've cooled off and apologized for all the angry things they'd said. She hadn't really meant any of it. But instead he had left, and ruined all the happiness their family had.
Lidy and Cal were already wading in the lake, laughing and splashing each other. Thora had taken out her sketchbook again and was drawing something. Crow had always said that from what he remembered of Uldren's childhood, Thora reminded him of Mara, always quietly standing to the side, studying, and doing secret things she didn't want anyone else to know about. He'd then chuckle and say that the other two were more like Uldren, rambunctious and insatiably curious about everything around them.
"But they've got a chance," he'd whispered, "Because they have us, to teach them. Uldren never really had a chance. From what I remember about his mom... she was.... a little strange. And I don't remember anything about his dad at all."
Now Petra remembered Uldren again, how he'd told her all about his life before the Reef, and how he'd said he could trust her with everything, and how she had actually trusted him with everything. Given him everything. He'd been the first person she'd ever given herself to willingly, and it had been wonderful while it lasted. Just like her marriage to Crow. No, no that wasn't over. He was coming back, as soon as he had his Light back, he would come back and be with her again. She forced back a tear, taking a deep breath to steady herself. She had to be calm, for her kids. They deserved the best face she could give them.
"Come on," she said brightly, mustering a smile, "It's big inside!"
They ooohed and ahhed over the house, an equivalent to a glowing modern awoken private beach mansion at least four times the size of their very comfortable house back on the EDZ. She let each of the kids pick a room to be their bedroom, and promised to get them new things to make the rooms their own. When she would have time for that, she wasn't sure. She headed down to the large, metallic kitchen with its bar, hanging lights, and glass cabinets. It opened up onto the living room, a spacious area with long couches and floor to ceiling windows. Petra looked away quickly, trying not to remember all the cuddling and kissing that had taken place on those couches, of that happiness she would never have again. Dinner. Yes, as promised, Mara had sent some of her servants to deliver groceries and the fridge was full.
She heard a noise, and looked up. Thora was poking around the living room, not realizing Petra was watching her. She immediately located every secret panel and opened them to check that there was a weapon stored behind, nodding to herself. Had she seen this place in a dream? Petra felt a little uncomfortable. Thora's foresight freaked her out a little now that she knew who it was talking to her. Riven. Riven had been the real mastermind behind Cayde's death, another loved one taken from her too soon. What had Thora seen that made her want to be prepared for a fight?
