Just, Lab everything for a season, up the difficulties at which we get matchmaking, and let people have FUN.
LFG on a website or phone app, is dumb, has been, and your numbers on people completing 1 dungeon or 1 raid shows the abysmal rate at which anyone touches end game content.
Destiny 2 is a single player game, pretending to be an MMO by leaving Co-Op on.. Except when its needed. If the game had been designed as an MMO, the story wouldn't be about how special our guardian is, it would be about how special our fireteam was, and would still have automatic matchmaking for everything.
Yeah, sure, you may not get a FLAWLESS zero death run or whatever, but Bungie you've HINGED so much of the reward system on just being ABLE To do content, and matchmaking is LITERALY the only difference as to why someone Does or Doesn't participate in that content.
And you KNOW it works because you did it with Trials, and it EXPLODES the community activity in trials EVERY TIME even as it continues to fall back to its pre update numbers.
Your writers do so much fun stuff with the characters and lore as they can. So much is built off of it for Dungeons and Raids and building up higher tier content. Let people actually get to experience it. They don't care if they aren't the top .000001%... they just want to -EXPERIENCE- it.
There's no realistic excuse not to from what I've seen so Please just try it.

Destiny is a single player game? Since when? Almost every end game content of any worth requires a well coordinated fireteam. If you have a hard time, or don't want to participate in LFG, there's this thing called a Clan where there are groups of individuals who like running things. Matchmaking in regular strikes teams you up with...simpletons that I would trust with a potato gun and you're supposed to think of them as a "team" - surely you jest. Destiny has always, and forever will be a SOCIAL game; meaning it's not WHAT you're playing, it's WHO you're playing with. You want to do a dungeon? Legend DoE? Raid - then get to cracking on meeting some friends or join a clan. Problem solved.
