Most online service providers rate their performance in terms of numbers of 9s as a worst-case reliability scenario guarantee. For example, 5 9's would be at least 99.999% uptime, 3 9's would be at least 99.9% uptime.
Windows 7 users like myself have been unable to even launch the game since Season of the Lost launched. We will miss a total of 23 consecutive days before the anticipated patch that now has a release date of Sep 16. This is unprecedented in my experience for a paid service, and now that we know (hopefully) the bounds of this extreme downtime event, it is interesting to consider the reliability of Bungie's service in this way.
To be maximally conservative and give Bungie the benefit of the doubt, I'll compare against the entire lifetime of Destiny 2. D2 released on September 7, 2017. From that date through September 23, 2021 a total of 35,304 hours will have elapsed. In comparison the time of service unavailability from this issue alone will have been three full weeks plus two days, so 24 hours * 23 days = 552 hours.
552 / 35304 = 0.0156 = 1.56%. Put differently, this downtime alone compared to the lifetime of D2 means the reliability of Bungie's service to these paying customers on this supported platform has dropped to 98.4%, or less than 2 9's. To those who think that number still seems high or reasonable, it isn't; this is the equivalent of 2 hours and 37 minutes of downtime per week on average over the last 4 years.
I honestly thought Bungie would have this fixed by 9/10 given the hype around Trials but now all affected will also miss the first weekend of the new Trials. While some affected might be hopping on the free GeForce Now service to progress the story in halting 60 minute max sessions, that won't work at all for Trials (or raids, etc.).
Questions which stand out include: Are those affected going to get a massive boost of XP and Pinnacles and Seasonal progress to level the playing field? If Reed's Regret is an early Trials reward, will it be selectable by us or unlocked for focusing on demand later? Will we be able to get our Trials progress doubled on demand for a weekend, though we'll be far behind our opponents' Light now with a greater than 3-week handicap in progression (unless there's a kickstart/boost)? Will there be compensation in Silver or redeemable engrams?
Will Bungie censor this post despite complete conformance to the CoC because the math reveals uncomfortable hard truth?
I hope the answers in form of Bungie's response to those affected serve to reassure not just those on Windows 7 - but everyone on all platforms who could be affected by a similar issue in the future. The ball is in Bungie's court to make this right.

While I do sympathize with those who have issues in windows 7 the one thing that Bungie should do is update their minimums to exclude windows 7 in the long run and just do windows 10 and 11 when it becomes available. Honestly 7 needs to be removed (imo) from the specs list. Good on Bungie for even doing a patch for it. But I’d still recommend people doing an upgrade regardless of their feelings towards windows 10.
