So ima just start with: I love Chainsaw Man (CSM) and not just for the story, but the art too.
1) I like the sketch like art style
2) detailed while not too detailed. Those shirt wrinkles are n i c e
3) the monsters in here are amazing and creative
So I decided, "why not try out this guy's style? See what I can pick up"
And I gotta say, kudos to Fujimoto, this took me half a month maybe, and he does a chapter each week.
Anyways, that's why I did this.
Now, I decided the best course of action, was to do an outline, then fill it in (I just completed the eye first cause it's ez)
It pains me when I don't go straight to detail (and it sucks). I skipped on the feather outline cause I'd add that in later and it'd only make it harder for telling where the body actually was. Then I went onto drawing the base of the wood (no texture) and the vines. It was satisfying. Then I worked in the antlers, did some texture on those and the arms, did some more work on the stump, then moved to feathers.
Hardest part was the improv. No way was I going to 100% eyeball a manga replica of the Future Devil with all the details in the right spot.
No.
So I had to make my own details, and that means:
Understanding why that one line is the way it is!!!
Basically, I had to figure out what was what, and how Fujimoto got it to look like that
I made mistakes. Some visible (coughs in stump repeating cause my eyes tapped out during outline phase), and some that really don't matter too much unless you're a critic.
But it was rewarding.
I'd say I learned how to make vines, feathers, and wood textures (kind of). It's pretty neat actually.
so I've held this back for a while cause I wasn't sure whether I should color or not...
I hate coloring, so here we are! Maybe I'll get something out next month
This was made on 7/11/21
if you couldn't tell, Fujimoto is the author of CSM.
I'm planning another like this, but a different Devil. I got the outline, I'm on details now. We'll see.
