Destiny 2 is my favorite game ever. The story is ever-evolving and enticing, the destinations are beautiful and packed with things to explore, and the power fantasy is next to nothing else I've played in a video game. However, over the years, some things have started bugging me more and more, to the point where I don't really play any more aside from catching up on the story. The things that are bothering me more than anything else right now are the way it feels to get new legendary weapons, the amount of "filler" loot that is more annoying than fun to pick up off the ground, and the structure of power leveling inside of Destiny 2.
The first topic that I'm referring to is the state of seasonal loot in the game. I used to play for hours and hours going after triumphs and farming weapons in the process, and it was a really good feeling to finally get that perfect Ikelos shotgun: but that feeling is all but gone. This season almost hooked me again, since the weapons are really unique, but something is missing. I don't know if it's because all the weapons are linked to a single activity, or if it's just something that happens because I already have really cool weapons that I've accumulated over the years, but I just can't be bothered to chase a god roll for all of them. Maybe if they were more spread out through the game, or if some of the main seasonal themed weapons were only unlocked after completing certain triumphs, then I would have a reason to play; but just grinding the seasonal activity over and over for a gun isn't really rewarding in my opinion.
Next, I'd like to talk about the loot that comes between getting the seasonal legendaries: filler loot. Filler loot is basically anything that drops from defeating normal enemies or random loot that you find in between getting the gear that you really want. In essence, it's mostly rare gear, also known as "blue" gear, and old legendaries that I haven't ever considered equipping onto my character. This kind of loot feels really unrewarding to obtain, and I rarely hesitate when dismantling it. Aside from the occasional power bump when a new expansion drops, blue gear and world gear drops are ultimately worthless in the grand scheme of things, and something needs to be done about it since it's just frustrating to come across blue gear at this point. Something that I would do if I could call the shots would be to allow blue armor to upgrade to legendary armor through quests or material usage, leveling it up in rarity. That would expand the loot pool immensely, and it would allow for some cool armor designs to finally see the light of day. I know this would probably be a huge technical undertaking, but I just don't see what else could be done here to make me excited for a piece of blue gear.
Finally, we arrive at the culmination of all points, and what might actually be the root of the problem: power leveling inside of Destiny 2. The fact that the base power level of a guardian beginning their adventure inside of this game is over one thousand, it stands to reason that this system is past due for a change. New players get confused as to why their power level is so high when they begin, and veteran players grow tired of grinding the same things to acquire an arbitrary number to effectively reach the same power they were at last season. There is no "growth" in the power system, it just feels like grinding to get to the same spot you were in before, while occasionally getting weaker as a new piece of content drops. It's not a good feeling, especially considering the power grind is what used to keep me up all night playing way back in the first and second years of the game. I understand and respect that players need a number to chase to feel stronger, but this doesn't make me feel stronger, it makes me feel frustrated. Seasonal weapons often drop at lower power, forcing me to either sacrifice a weapon and infusion materials just to play with the new loot (which is replaced and infused five minutes later for the next new weapon). Infusing gear doesn't feel rewarding, it feels patronizing since I know I'm just reaching for the same strength I was at before. Picking up world legendaries doesn't feel good, because even if they can be cool in some circumstances, I'd have to use precious resources to make them a high enough power to be worthwhile. Perhaps attack and defense stats need to return, and the entire level system needs to be reset, or maybe special quest materials should have to be obtained to push weapons past certain power levels, I don't know. But what I do know is that I honestly believe this system needs to be completely reworked from the ground up, as it is the cause of so many problems in the game.
Overall, I still love this game, and I will continue to support it until its final breath, but there's no use in lying to myself anymore about how I feel when it comes to these things. Destiny 2 is becoming increasingly more frustrating and patronizing to play due to things like this going unchanged for so long. If these things ever do get changed, I honestly think that the player base would be much happier than they are now, since it's this kind of frustration that breeds negativity and toxicity, and it's taken root at the core of the game. If you read all of this, please let me know if you disagree on anything, and let me know why and what you think would make the game better; I'd love to talk about it!
