Solved my random crashing with error : Problem Reading Game Content
Update 2: Turns out it may not have been the shader cache, of all things, I believe it was Windows Defender causing the problems. The crashing had started again after a PC restart, but I had noticed the day I had played for 4 hours without a problem, Windows Defender had failed to start because of some windows nonsense. So I manually shut off Windows Defender 'Virus & Threat protection' ... 'problem reading content' crashing stopped, several hours played again with no issue. What a mess.
Update: I finally found the culprit, for me anyways. It may or may not work for you, but if you haven't tried this fix, give it a shot. The 'problem reading game content' error, was because of the shader cache. Once I disabled this in the Nvidia control panel for D2, I was able to play for 4 straight hours, through all manner of activities without a hiccup or crash.
I was also experiencing crashes without this error, but those appear to have been solved by correcting my RAM profile in the BIOS. Evidently during my latest BIOS update it had set my RAM timing tables and speed to values that were not only 1GHz slower, but also just not agreeing with my RAM. Setting it back to the XMP 3200mhz CL16 timing (which this RAM is specified for) solved those crashes.
I've left the original post for those who want to see what other solutions I tried that failed.
The Problem:
Since Feb 10th 2021 (when I picked up Beyond Light + Season), Destiny 2 has been crashing at random intervals with that lovely and utterly vague dialog box claiming there was a problem reading game content. Sometimes I get 5 minutes, sometimes 20, but never even close to something like an hour of consistent play. This makes any activity other that free roam virtually impossible, as crashes during missions reset you and crashes during activities boot you out and you receive no rewards.
Solutions that didn't work:
- Literally every solution for this you can find on the net. I've tried them all.
- Reinstalled Windows 10 (sort of needed to do this anyhow)
- Reinstalled Steam (kind of happens when you nuke the OS)
- Reinstalled Destiny 2 (Because why not)
- Stress test CPU (pass)
- Stress test GPU (pass)
- Memory diagnostic (8x extended passes, no errors)
- CheckDisk with repair
Basically, all software is fresh, all hardware is in perfect working order.
Hardware Profile:
- AMD Ryzen 7 2700x CPU
- Gigabyte RTX 1070ti 8GB Factory OC GPU
- 2x 8GB G.Skill TridentZ 3200mhz RAM
- 1TB Samsung 970 Evo NVMe SSD (Destiny is on this drive)
- 256GB Kingston HyperX SATA 3 SSD (Windows is on this drive)
- Gigabyte AORUS Gaming 7 Wifi Motherboard
- Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 750w Gold PSU
- Dell S2716DG 27" 1440p 144hz Monitor w/ G-Sync connected via DisplayPort
- Hardwired Xbox One controller used for play.
Software Info:
Windows 10 Pro w/ latest updates.
BIOS, Chipset drivers, NVMe drivers, Display drivers, LAN/WLAN/BT drivers, Audio drivers are all up to date.
Use Windows Defender for AV
Steam games folder is excluded from scans
Destiny 2 has firewall exceptions, as does Steam
Basically, I keep on top of my drivers and OS updates, it's all the latest and nothing is blocking the game.
I would encourage anyone else with this issue to post hardware profiles in hopes of giving Bungie a hand in possibly finding some patterns, as this problem is of course only affecting certain people, and there must be a reason for it.
