Sunsetting feels like burning down the house to kill some roaches in the kitchen. It’s easy to see how weapons like Revoker, Recluse and Mountaintop could have been individually sunset to avoid a stale meta in PvP and PvE, and yet they have taken dozens, hundreds of other weapons with them. Looking over the next slate of weapons to go, everything in Season of Dawn, I simply have to ask why? Why is this happening? Why are any of these weapons a problem? The answer is that they’re not, and Bungie simply wants us to chase new things, and then maybe, maybe they’ll reissue them later for us to regrind.
So yes, it’s time to sunset sunsetting. This is not working for anyone, not even Bungie, because the excitement for new weapons is overshadowed by what players are constantly losing and the fact that every drop now expires. I would be amazed if we hit The Witch Queen and sunsetting was still in place at this rate, but that’s a long way off, and it’s going to be a rough few seasons as more gear cycles out and more old gear returns to be re-gotten. This has to end.
