As Rogue jumped through the portal, he heard the cat exclaim, “Oh, come on!”
A few seconds later, he found out why. Rogue fell out of the portal and landed on metal. The cat landed next to him.
“Note to self: the rookie is not the best at portal-making.” The cat muttered. Rogue glared at it and struggled to his feet. He was in a large room that seemed to be inside of a cave. In the center, there was a metal platform that Rogue had landed on. He was facing a large, circular door made out of metal. There seemed to be runes engraved in it. A stone staircase was behind him that led up to a grand pair of birch doors. A faint whispering could be heard emanating from the metal door. The cat sighed.
“Why, oh why, did we have to arrive here?” The cat moaned.
“What’s wrong with this place?” Rogue asked.
“This is the entrance to the vault. It holds a powerful magical artifact. It’s been closed for thousands of years.” The cat said, staring at the metal door.
“And?”
“It’s very deep in Mount Arcadia.”
“We’re inside a mountain?” Rogue asked. The cat nodded.
“The city of Arcadia is built inside a mountain. It’s kept us magicians safe for as long as anyone can remember.” The cat turned to face Rogue. “In fact, you were born here.”
Rogue blinked. “I was born in Antry.”
“You were raised in Antry. This is your birthplace.” The cat said.
“I don’t even know who you are. How am I supposed to trust you on this?”
“Because you should remember the name Alvin.” The cat said.
“Alvin…” He remembered that name. That was the name of his childhood friend, the family cat. It was presumed dead after the fire that orphaned Rogue. “You’re...that cat?”
“Yes.” Alvin said. “I was a good friend of your father’s. He wanted you to become a magician, just like him.”
“I thought he said he was a magician to impress me.” Rogue said, not believing his own words.
“No. Your parents were honest-to-gods magicians. And, if you want, you can too.” Alvin said.
“After today, I don’t think I have a choice.”
“You don’t. So, what will it be?” Alvin asked.
Rogue took a deep breath. “I...accept.”
Alvin smiled and turned to the doors, which were now open. Three men stood at the bottom of the staircase, smiling.
“Good choice.” One of them said. Rogue recognized him from the battle with the man made of flames.
“From this day forth, we recognize you as part of the Arcadian Society of Magic. Nathan Cross, welcome to the family.”
