((SPOILERS FOR IMMOLANT PT. 2))
As we all know, killing off a character is a big deal, especially when that character is as well-loved and famous as Sagira. Ultimately, Destiny takes place during wartime, so character deaths are to be expected. That being said, deaths have to be done right, and Sagira's was not.
First of all, I'd like to address the fact that Sagira, a well-liked character, was just (presumably) killed off. Not a background character, not a minor character, not a character the playerbase disliked. And what was she killed in? Weblore, no more. No in-game respect or recognition. Sundance, who we had never met in a cutscene before Cayde's death, got more than that. Let's be real with ourselves, Sagira is loud and proud, and it's an insult to her character for her to die so uneventfully.
Now, hence the title, the real issue with Sagira's death is the trope it plays into: Women in Refrigerators. Fridging, for those who are unaware, is when a female character is irreversibly wounded, maimed, or killed in order to develop a male character's story arc. Sagira's death serves two main goals in this lore entry: Saving Osiris, and teaching Osiris that he needs to stop trying to do everything by himself. This, quite frankly, is a dictionary-worthy example of fridging, as Sagira's death is overall unsatisfying and nearly casual, as it was only included in weblore, outside of the game, and the only function of her death was to serve as a plot device to develop Osiris's character.
I'm aware that this point of view might not be respected by a lot of my fellow players. Frankly, I'm afraid of getting harassed for posting this, but I believe that this is important, and that Bungie can do better, and has done better in the past. Sagira deserves better than a fridge, and it's insulting to not only her character, but to the Destiny 2 fans that love her for her to be killed off like this. I know I'm setting myself up for disappointment by hoping she isn't truly dead, but her death was so empty and unnecessary that it feels fake.
I hope that this reaches the people it needs to, because I know I can't be the only one upset about this. Fly high, Sagira. You deserved the world and more.
