Guardian Stories B1, House of Witches. Part 6: Coward.
House of Witches? I want to know is who there Kell is? Akain said out loud over the radio. Few houses remained, he believed only three Fallen houses remained the House of Judgement, House of Salvation and the House of Light. The House of Salvation was seen as a problem but finding their Kell Eramis was difficult she was gaining followers didn't have the power to attract the Fallen to her cause. But many Fallen did not agree with the other house, the House of Light and believed it's Kell, Mithrax was weak for still believing in the Traveler. So they had been in search of a new power, to think they would delve so low and forge an alliance with the Hive is very frightening, who they named Kell must have some power over the Hive or be completely mad.
On closer inspection the Fallen's ship the Ketch, had been sitting there for many years, Akain could see plant life growing from it and moss on the cracks and rust. But the parts of the Ketch lowest to the ground had been rebuilt, there were many doorways and entrances, they even had a makeshift vehicle hanger were he could see half a dozen spider walker tanks.
We could try entering the hanger? It's fairly unguarded, in the last three minutes I have seen a pair of vandals walk by the doors. Viola stated. I could take them easily without a sound, Yuri said and Akain believed her, he had seen her in Crucible flank the enemy team right under there noses and then wipe them all out. He wasn't sure if it was because her small size or that she was a true Nightstalker but she could be as quiet as a windless day although she can cause a storm with her temper.
No, Eve held up her hand to stop the discussion. Akain you know the Fallen, where would you go? Akain instinctually tried to rub his cheek while he was in thought but only met the plate of his helmet. Fallen usually have separate entrances for the most notable and high ranked commanders in there main bases. They also may use them as escape entrances or to smuggle materials in and out of the ship.
Robert, could I borrow your sniper rifle? Akain asked, he wanted to see if he could see an entrance or anything like it. He turned his head to look for him, he wasn't standing nearby? It was getting to dark he couldn't see to far. He's gone. Akain said with disbelief on his voice. Everyone but Eve turned there heads to look around. What a dishonourable act, Viola said with a sound of slight disgust. He's a bloody coward, well anyways we get a bigger pay now, thanks you -blam!- of a Warlock, Yuri said like she had been expecting it the whole time. Akain knew it was an act, he could see her shaking slightly. Viola looked at Yuri with displeasure and was probably going to scold her for her rude words but Eve spoke out. Nothing we can do, Viola give Akain your auto rifle, it has a decent scope. Without question she passed it to Akain. Don't loose her, Viola said trying to build the team spirit that they needed. Of course not, only need her for a minute, Akain replied back, giving a weak smile that she could not see.
He raised the rifle and stared into the scope, from left to right he scanned the ship slowly, looking for... There! Over there, they have a concealed door on the right side of the ship Akain spoke with gratefulness and pride in his knowledge, they might easily get in. He made a mental note in his brain to remember the exact spot and gave back the rifle to Viola, she looked impressed. How could you tell she asked?
If we were close enough our ghosts could detect it, but since my ghost never speaks, I learned that there's a difference slight difference. It looks like it be put there like a hatch, like it isn't meant to be there, even though your brain tells you it's normal. If we wanted to be doubly sure, we could tap or throw something at it and it would make a sound like something's hitting an energy shield instead of metal. Akain finished knowing that he probably wasting their time. Impressive said Eve, that's where we go, we will skirt round the boarders of the camp and get in through there.
They followed Eve she was leading them to the entrance, they didn't have to try and hide much, Crates had been stacked high everywhere. While they passed by them, Adam pulled out his Ghost and it scanned the crates. They are full with old broken golden age machines and other odds and ends, things they have looted and stolen, the Ghost told them in it's male concerned voice. Adams Ghost always sounded worried even about what they would eat in the evening, like they were starving to death and it was there last chance. Wait! Eve said, holding her fist up. Less than ten metres directly ahead of them were three Hive acolytes guarding an entrance to the compound, one was looking in their direction but they were obscured by the a large container.
Yuri could you hit the one looking at us? Eve asked. Of course I can, can't you? She wittily replied. Well yes, but I have the other two, Eve answered. Ready? Eve gave Yuri a second, Yuri nodded Lets Go!
They burst from their cover and a knife flew high speed right into one of the acolytes eyes and it's head burst into fire. Before his body dropped to the ground, Eve had sprinted past Yuri and she went into a slide, slicing the tendons behind the knee of the acolyte on her right, she gracefully bounced from a slide into a something like a pirouette and sank the same knife into the neck of the left acolyte. Before giving the last living acolyte a chance to shout in pain from his severed knee, Eve pulled another knife out from over her shoulder, flipped it in her hand and buried it in it's face. It was like a dancer the way she fought.
Let's keep moving, Eve said, like they had just stopped for a brake, she cleaned her blades with solar fire, burning away the blood and by the time they had began to move all three bodies had burnt away. As they moved, Yuri broke the silence. Where did you did you learn to fight? Yuri tried to sound like this was a casual question, but Akain knew she was impressed although she would never admit it. Eve did not answer, but laughed. They reached the concealed door without further interruptions, staying in the dark and moving with near silence. Nearby light slightly reflected of the wall, barely illuminating them, the Sky was pitch black tonight. Lumiere my Ghost, open this door for us, Akain asked. It appeared next in front of him, blinked once and proceeded to infiltrate a computer terminal near the door. A full minute passed by in silence, then the wall flickered and disappeared, showing them a corridor that split and went two directions.
Damn, Eve said. We are going to split up into two teams. With Robert gone, they would be uneven. Myself and Viola will head right. Eve said as she pointed towards the corridor split. You three stick together, Fallen information should be at the bridge of the Ketch which would be left. While we go right and if well can get to the belly of the ship, see if we can get an understanding of what the Hive have been doing. Download as much information as you can, find out who the raid team are dealing with or who their Kell is, meet us back here in one hour. Our radios won't work through these walls, Hive magic won't allow a transmission further than a dozen metres. Eve told them all, Akain knew she spoke from experience.
I trust you all, but if you can, don't fight, if the alarm goes off, we will never see daylight again. Eve finished turning away from them and Viola and Eve walked away guns ready. Adam raised his weapon, you heard the lady, lets be back for diner. He spoke in a commanding voice and they began walking and turned left.
Writers note: As I said I wanted to give a real Idea of what Guardians would be like, what better way to show that than have someone leave, when they know the missions impossible. For the most part of the story I want to focus on the main trio, Akain, Adam and Yuri. As they really are the main characters of this story. Thanks for everyone who liked my post, it really does help. I hope you are enjoying it so far. Sorry if it has been slow to start of with, but be ready for more combat and drama, I won't say much but we are not even half way through the short story yet! See you soon!
