Guardians Stories B1, House of Witches Part 3: Zavalla's Declamation.
Akain could feel the cold on his face, his face leaning against the glass of the ship. He opened his eyes and his vision was blurred, he blinked to regain his sight, he could see Adam slumped in the drivers seat of the ship. Panic shot through him like lightning, they might crash into some of the Travelers debris, they were to close! He looked out of the window to see if there were any oncoming pieces coming there way, but the sky was clear. The few clouds that were there when they had first taken to the skies had disappeared, the sky was blue and the Traveler... He shook Adam awake with the excitement of a child, look! Akain pointed out the window. Adam woke with a jolt his eyes looking for a target, he turn following Akain's point to see the Traveler. It's whole! Both Adam and Akain grinned like idiots towards each other.
After a few second Adam said. We need to drop by the by the Tower and see what's going on, Adam's mind switching into mission mode. Akain's smile died as fast as it had come. I don't think I'm... Akain half whispered. Your ready. Adam said solidly looking into Akain's eye, I'll be with you ever step of the way.
Adam pulled out of the slow orbit around the Traveler and shot them straight for the Tower. As they approached they could see a huge amount of activity around the Tower, ships coming in by the dozens. How are we going to get into the Tower, ship storage must be packed, Akain asked, hoping they might turn back and wait for the crowds to disperse. I'll use the pass I got from the Vanguard, since we are going on a strike mission tomorrow we have top priority access to the Tower and our own fireteam ship spaces, Adam said this smugly. They approached close to top of the Tower and Adam's ship was automatically guided by Tower Control. When they got close enough they both stood inside the ship and were teleported onto the Tower itself.
The normally clear space that was used for landing was nearly packed. Guardians, Warlock, Titan & Hunters had crowded the Tower. So many, so very many, Akain thought to himself. Some were trying to get past, some were celebrating by playing music from there Ghosts, others were talking to other Guardians and many were dancing, most to the music that was being played, others dancing to what Akain only could imagine was music they and they alone could hear. He looked around for Adam, but there were so many armoured and unarmoured Guardians he didn't know where to begin to look for Adam. He spotted a familiar face at his normal place, working like nothing incredible had just happened. He pushed past countless Guardians until he got to the desk of Banshee-44. He had a disassembled rifle in front of him and he was replacing the faulty parts of it with new pieces.
Hey! Do you know why everyone crowded here? Akain asked with a shout, as the amount of ruckus coming from the hundreds of Guardians was nearly unbearable. Without looking up at him, Banshee replied, Vanguards having a meeting... about the Traveler, somethings going on. Any idea what? Akain asked, but he had lost Banshee, he was back in his work or trying to remember something. There was no point asking again. He felt a tap on his left shoulder, he turned, no one was there. A Vinegaroon-2SI when was the last time you had an upgrade? Akain turned to the voice, standing there, her hand on one hip and the other had his sidearm in her hand looking at it mockingly. Yuri flipped it and held it out for Akain to take, he pocketed it quickly. What are you doing here? Akain asked a little embarrassed.
Yuri replied in what Akain could only guess was an impression of a stupid ogres voice. The same reason everyone else is. The Travelar decided to stretch his legs and patch himself up or did you have your nose in your books that you didn't even.. suddenly someone had grabbed her with with one arm around her waist and raised her onto one shoulder. As much as I would like to see yous fight again lets save it for crucible. Adam laughed out, as Yuri screamed and began to elbow Adams head. I'm not putting you down until you play nice. Yuri said some things that turned some offended looks from Titans before Adam laughed again and sent a small jolt of arc energy through his arm, that shut her up in a instant. He put her down gently and she jumped back into a decent stance, I hate when you do that, I could take you out in a second if we weren't in the Tower, Yuri said as she blushed madly with embarrassment. How about when we get back from our mission? I'll only use sidearm if you think that will help? Adam said that to remind her that he hadn't lost a single match to her.
The crowd started to quiet down, Yuri was about to spit out another insult when they noticed. Zavalla clapped his hands slowly to get everyone's attention, he made his way to the stairs next to Banshee workshop, so he was elevated above everyone.
Guardians. Although this could be seen as a day of celebration, it also could be seen as a day of defeat. Mars, Mercury, Titan and Io have vanished as well as those who refused to evacuate, Zavalla lowered his head in what Akain could only guess was mourning. This started a lot of hushed, slightly panicked whispers from the surrounding Guardians. Zavalla raised his head and his hand to command silence. We currently have our best searching for answers. Meanwhile we ask that Guardians remain vigilant, we stand together against the darkness and believe that the Traveler protects us as it has just done and will always do. Thank you, we will give more news as soon as it comes.
Zavalla walked back down the stairs towards the lift to his office. Guardians were momentarily shocked into silence, soon talk spread among them, he could see some of them already departing. There was no more music, just nervous chatter. Come on yous two, follow me, Adam said. Adam pushed passed the people in front of him clearing a way for Yuri and Akain. Ikora! Adam shouted above the now increasing noise. Akain could see that Ikora was standing apart from the crowd next to the lift to Zavalla's office. As we approached her, she stood straight, bringing with it a commanding, wise look to her. Guardians, I have been meaning to speak to you Adam. She spoke softy to him. Same to you, will the strike still be taking place tomorrow Ikora? Adam asked, expecting it to be cancelled because of what was just said.
No, it will not, It takes place tonight. Ikora replied.
