“Why do you give me this job, Slip?”
Groks the bounty hunter does not understand the point of this job, and for that he is irritated. He is too prideful, one of the things I despise in my people.
But I hide my distaste. I know he will work, no matter how many insults he spits at me. “It is important. Must be good, kept safe. Or no pay.”
“No pay?” Groks roars in disbelief, “You will pay me Kell-Maker!”
“Very simple job,” I assure passively, “No trouble for you, more than enough pay for little work. If done wrong, you will do it again until made right.”
Groks grumbles, beginning to accept the deal. “Simple job, yes. I will do it right first try, Beggar. Won’t slip like you. I will expect you to have my payment.”
“Yes,” I say, “Three bales Etheric Helix, promise to keep you free of Prison of Elders.”
I can see the bounty hunter puff up with pride at the thought of earning such a payment with such ease. He is gluttonous, in it only for himself. Three bales is far too generous a payment, but to me it is worth the price to repay Shadow for the kindness she showed me.
“Tell me, Slip,” Groks jabs in his low form of Eliksni speech, “What makes this so important? Is it for the magics of the sterile slavers that keep you as pet? Or…”
The bounty hunter chuckles at his own wryness, “Maybe you have gone insane. Like Skola-”
I kill the feed and turn away. My staff marks a steady beat on the cold metal floor as I stride away. Groks mocks me, but he will do his work and I will have my gift for Shadow. Hopefully it will be enough.

Happy Halloween everyone! I hope you’ve all enjoyed the spooky season. Did you have a cool costume? Any stories of something interesting that happened this Halloween? How was the Festival of the Lost for you? It’s pretty weird, me posting a chapter of a Valentines story for Halloween. But I suppose my weirdness surprises no one. Anyway, I’ll post the last chapter of Lost & Found (an actual Festival of the Lost story) as soon as I can. I know I missed my deadline to post it Wednesday, and my backup plan of finishing it for Halloween (effectively making my tardiness seem intentional) has also failed. Maybe I’ll finish it tomorrow, maybe in a few days. I don’t know.
